An almost ran entry for Jtas Design Contest #24

Evening all,

Due to events beyond my control, I wasn't able to get my entry done for the contest. However, I am posting a rough draft for others to look at. One of the events was discovering that the Barekdoldins was in TNE. I had a design that was 1,800 dtons and had to start over. Unfortunately, I still couldn't match the 500 dtons that TNE has. Anyway, the following, still needs polishing, is close to what I would have entered.


Barekdoldins-class 650-ton Darrian Patrol Cruiser, Barekdoldins (TL13)

The following data chip contains Phoenix Data Analysis Corporation's (PDAC) report on the intelligence packet provided by the INS. Further, PDAC is providing additional information our staff has uncovered while researching the Darrian space program in general and on the Barekdoldins-class Patrol Cruiser.

Analysis of the holographic images provided in the INS information packet indicated that the Barekdoldins-class hull appears to be based on or is a pre-Maghiz design. While performing an extensive search of several spacecraft and starship databases, our researcher team returned a 90% match between the Barekdoldins and the Terran Confederation's Torambu-class Frigate (Note 1). The major external differences between the two vessels are hull dimensions, displacement tonnage, and weapon systems and there placement. Continuing with the analysis of the visual information we have that the Barekdoldins-class cruiser has:

1. The primary weapon is either a beam or high energy weapons and is located above the flight avionics dome.

2. Two sets of three 400 to 500 mm missile tubes are located towards the ventral side of the vessel below the flight avionics dome.

3. Two of the three turrets, are fixed, and ppear to have triple beam weapons installed. The third, which retracts into the hull, maybe be a combination tractor/repulsor system. This is based on the holographic evidence of the manipulation of a small non-powered sphere and small craft.

4. Analysis of the various antenna and other arrays located on the hull indicate that:
a. Communications can be conducted using radio, maser, laser, and meson systems. Based on Darrian communication systems purchased on the open market the Communication ranges are probably: Radio - 50,000,000,
Maser - 500,000,000, Laser - 100,000,000, and Meson - 20,000,000.
b. Has both ASEA and PESA systems that probably has a detection range of 3,000,000 miles.
c. EW capability is estimated to be equivalent to systems used in the IN, however the system is more compact.

5. The hull appears to have an additional layer of plating or armor, which was observed during the launch and recovery of the Barekdoldins small craft. We feel that this extra layer is primarily for radiation protection, which adds an dditional DR 1,000 to the vessels armor rating.

6. Analysis of the jump and maneuver drive external features lead our technicians to estimate that the Barekdoldins-class Patrol
Cruisers are capable of at least Jump 3, standard jump distance for Darrian vessels, and Jump 5, more probably Jump 4. The maneuver drive external features indicate that the vessel can pull between 4 and 9 Gs depending on the vessels load out.

Analysis of data provided by various sensor readouts confirm that the Barekdoldins has a secondary layer of plating. Additionally, there appears to be two heavily shielded compartments near the center of the vessel. We estimate
that these compartments are probably survival shelters, which are included as additional protection from hazardous radiation levels. Readings seem to indicate that the cargo bay can hold approximately 80 dtons of equipment. One source indicates that a modular troop compartment, weighing 70 dtons, can be installed in less than a day. Scans of the jump fuel tankage are estimated to hold enough hydrogen for a jump five drive. The readouts of the probable engineering spaces indicate that the Darrian's have a more compact design and are using an fusion power plant.

The data provided from the destruction of the Sword Worlds trade delegation at Ator and at least one merchant convoy indicate that the Barekdoldins-class weapon systems are probably:

1. A 2 to 3 GJ Graser main weapon system, which is based on the pinpoint strike and minimal damage to surrounding structures carried out against the Swordic trade mission compound on Ator.

2. Data provided on an attack and destruction of a Swordic trade convoy indicates thatthe Barekdoldins and follow on units also mount six 300 MJ X-ray lasers (Xraser) in two triple mount turrets. In addition to the beam weapon armament each vessel also has the capability of launching six heavy space combat missiles. The data on the missile detonations indicate that the Darrian's used conventional warheads and not anti-matter.

The following ship characteristics is our best estimate of the Barekdoldins-class from all available data.

Crew: 26 Total. 13 Command and Control, 5 Engineering (1 Maneuver Drive, 1 Jump Drive, 3 Engineer/Flight Crew), 2 Medical, 6 Gunners (1 Main Weapon Gunner, 5 Turret Gunners/Flight Crew).
