Aslan Alien Module 1 question!

Hi all

I have a quick question regarding Aslan: Alien Module 1 (GDW).

In the career tables, it lists "dual careers" of Space Forces and Space Officers.

Also there is Military Forces and Military Officers.

Now this is purely confusing! A "Space Forces" Aslan is technically a non-officer grunt, a lowly soldier who has zero rank. HOWEVER, he has a chance to get commissioned, which then (according to the module) promotes him to Rank 1 (officer rank) as well as instantly moving him up to at least Social Standing 9 (which is defined as "Aslan nobility").

Now what the hell do I do? If the lowly Space Forces grunt gets commissioned to Rank 1.... does he stay in the "Space Forces" career, or does he actually SWITCH to the "Space Officers" career? Does he switch to using the Space Officers skills tables? Does switch to using the "Space Officers" muster table?

Its' confusing.

This is explained at the bottom of page 10, which begins:
In the Space and Military careers a commission transfers the individual to the corresponding officer career. The transfer occurs immediately and merely signifies that the character is now an officer; further career resolution takes place in the Space Officer or Military Officer columns of the table. This transfer should not be taken as beginning a new career, and does not signify the beginning of a new career.
By the way, Aslan is alien module 1. Alien module 6 is the Solomani ;)

Excellent!! Thanks for the answer, Sigg!

And my bad.... yes, I just realized that Aslan is Module 1, and Solomani is Module 6. I have been reading both of them extensively (as I've been prepping for a Rimward campaign).

Glad to be of help

How far to Rimward are you setting it?

The area covering the Solomani Rim, Magyar, and Dark Nebula sectors.

Basically, the campaign takes place in the tense tri-border area of the Imperium, Hierate, and Solomani Confederation.

Of course, just adjacent to that region are very nice adventuring frontier sectors such as the Reaver's Deep and the Ustral Quadrant.

I have a question based on my going through the AM reprints and playing the chargen game (starting with Aslan). How are aliens treated WRT Psionics? I don't find anything in AM:1 or 3 about psionics. I haven't checked the others extensively (I think the Darrians are naturally psionic, and of course the Hivers...), but I can find nothing so far. Are the Hivers just hiding it from me, or is this something that was totally overlooked?

The Alien Modules do occasionally mention psionics with respect to racial use.

In AM1 (Aslan), you are correct, I also did not see any reference to psionics. Conclusion? I treat the Aslan use of psionics the same way, and same chances of obtaining psi training as inside Third Imperium.

HOWEVER... I do have a copy of DGP/MegaTraveller Solomani and Aslan. In that book, Aslan psions are described. In fact, there are even 2 pictures of Aslan psions in a "meditation-yoga-type" trance. All in all, Aslan culture is not fond of psionics in general; however, they do not persecute psionic users like the Third Imperium does.

AM6 (Solomani), the Alien Module clearly spells out the chance of a Solomani Confederation character finding a psionics training institute in the Confederation: the chances are slim. This is not because the Solomani Confederation is hostile against Psionics like the Third Imperium is; but it is simply because the Confederation has lagged in psionics research, and therefore there are very very few institutes that can teach psionics to Confederation characters. From this, I gather that the entire Solomani Sphere probably has less than 5 psionics institute total. And ummm ONE of them is already in Terra, which is militarily occupied by the Imperium.

Hivers do not (and cannot) use psionics, stated in the Hiver AM.

At least, that's what they keep telling us....

As I said, I haven't looked very hard yet, so I welcome the info, Maladominus. (And, I would love to get hold of those MT alien modules - bad eBay for not having what I need!

) I would think, though, with the persecution in the 3I, that the SR would be full of Psi Institutes. You go where you can work unencumbered. After all, that's why they grow poppies in Afghanistan and not Kansas City.
