Aslan Alien Module 1 question!

Also, is there any errata for the Alien Modules? I noticed the Mustering Out tables are full of things like Independence and Land for careers that only accept females.

So, for CT canon, how would the Aslan and Vargr view psionics?
I think the word you are looking for is "Ambivalent".

Ambivalent means that they neither suppress/discourage psionics; on the other hand, there is no indication that they openly glorify/embrace it either (like in the Zhodani Consulate).

Ambivalent is how I would describe their feelings toward psionics use.

Vargr tho.... well, it depends on which Vargr state you are referring to. Vargr are always variable. One Vargr nation could be an empire that openly endorses psionics. Another could be one that sentences psions to death instantly. Your mileage may vary with the Vargr. LOL

I would think, though, with the persecution in the 3I, that the SR would be full of Psi Institutes.
This was canonically explained in umm... I think it was explained in DGP's Solomani & Aslan.

The explanation given was this: During the time of the Psionics Suppression, the Solomani Sphere region was STILL a fully integral part of the Third Imperium. In other words, they were still part of Imperial population and culture. Hence, if the Imperium leaned towards psionics-bashing during that time, then the sentiment would have also spilled into the Solomani Sphere territories.

However, once the Solomani Sphere completely seceeded from the 3I (leading to the Rim War), they no longer had to abide by Third Imperium values. Hence, the 3I continued to have a stigma against psionics. The Confederation stigma eased up a bit.

Also to remember is that the Solomani Rim War pretty much drained/crippled the Confederation economy. They probably had no extra money left to build (or rebuild) any more psionic institutes.

Psionics is not discussed at all regarding the Aslan in CT. (Strange ommission.) Later editions seem to think Aslan have the same basic chances as humans, but the use of psionics is colored by their culture. So, for example, males would tend to shy away from telepathy. And most would likely view using psionics in battle or duels as "cheating". Aside from that, Aslan have no inclination for or against psionics.

It is quite likely that there are no formally organized institutions, as can be found in human circles. But the do likely have smaller facilities occationally available.

AM3 does have a small section on Vargr psionics. Basically, they have the same occurance and potential for psionics as do humans. As for its acceptance, anything goes. Some cultures view it as the Imperium does; others view it as the Zhodani do; most are somewhere in between. The biggest hindrance the Vargr suffer from is the complete lack of long term institutions devoted to the study and advancement of psionics. Active training facilities can very occationally be found, however.

For the Solomani, my take has always been that the population at large, having been borne of the Imperium after the psionic suppressions, view psionics just as the Imperium does. However, SolSec, always the pragmatists, actively cultivates and uses psionics as much as it can. But SolSec keeps this within their own circles, and uses the general society's general distain for psionics as a useful tool.

Regarding the Darrians, they are no more or less psionic than the Imperial norm. The major difference with the Darrians is that they do not persecute psions as does the Imperium. Psions are just another useful member of the society.

Nothing has ever been written about psionics institutes (or their Darrian equivalents). It is likely that there is no large formal institute as such (not wanting to insult their Imperial patron), but smaller facilities are likely to exist (probably in a university environment) on Mire and Darrian.

Sword Worlders are a bit inconsistent. They do not have a governmental suppression of psionics (as the Imperium does), but do have a cultural bias against psionics as it is apparently not "manly" (or whatever) enough for them. Despite that, there is apparently a psionics institute equivalent on Sacnoth. (Likely subsidized by the Zhodani.) [I don't remember where I read that tidbit.]

For the Hivers, even the completely different take on them given in TNE states that they are non-psionic.

Well, there we go again with those dang hard-to-find DGP pubs...

Edit: Thanks, daryen. All that is good info (and may help me actually find some of this in the books - I tend not to read straight through). end edit

FWIW, I went a checked exactly what AM6 said. It says that the Solomani do share the Imperial attitudes toward psionics. The rules piece says standard psionics rules are used, but it is harder to find a psionics institute. (Since the only real source for psionic knowledge is the Zhodani, and they are so far away.)

I still think, however, that SolSec will secretly adopt psionics and use it for their own purposes. They probably use any psionics institutes as recruiting tools. (Which should be pretty easy. Using an institute is against the law, so any potential recruit gets to either be thrown in jail forever, or become a psionic tool of SolSec.)

I'll say I don't often use the Psionics Institutes - if a character is psionic, there better be a better backstory than "I lucked out and found this place where they teach psionics." One pair of characters were raised by a cult where the leaders use their psionics to manipulate the cult - the orphans were being trained to be tools of the leadership, and their abilities were more than the cult could handle. Then the regular chargen begins.......
