Best TV SF for Traveller

Likely candidates would be Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, the old Doctor Who, Space Above & Beyond, Space 1999. What other TV shows are reflected in your Traveller Universe?

Well I have to say that Doctor Who is mostly out. It has given me the occassional idea (and I mean the old series; I do not care much for the new series), but generally the influence on me has been minimal.

I described Firefly to a friend that had never seen it as a "Traveller Western." I would call it very influential, especially considering that my game group prefers aftermath type campaigns (the Traveller equivalent would be the recovery from the Long Night).

I do not recall ever watching Space Above and Beyond, so it did not make that much of an impression on me. Space 1999 is a great view of operations; just toss in some Traveller technology and you have it. I have not seen it in some time (the DVDs are on my "too buy" list), however.

I tend to find inspiration in a lot of places so it is hard to say. Several shows can combine to form an idea in my head. I am really good at inventing complex plots. Too bad I am not a skilled writer; some of this stuff would make great novels.

These days I mostly get ideas from science fiction, drama, the news, current events, and would you believe the History Channel. To quote Mark Twain, "history does not repeat itself but it does rhyme"

Sticking JUST to TV...

for MTU, influences include: Jason of Star Command, Space Academy, Old BSG, Alien Nation, Bab5, Space: Above and Beyond, a bunch of Clint Eastwood movies (especially spaghetti westerns) which used to air as satuday afternoon filler.

The result looks much like Homeboys in Outer Space and Firefly.

Lost In Space, Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers (cartoon from a while back), Star Trek (and all of it's expansions), both BSGs.

Hi

Hi,

I'd suggest "Red Dwarf" & "Hitchikers' Guide to the Galaxy" and the anime "Planetes" as well.

Regards

That one where the earth went b00m and the moon with it's Base and smallcraft went off on adventures.

The old one, with a sublight generation ship that has lost it's command crew and is being run by the computer. The Sky Raiders world ship is a clone of it.

The movie where some of the earths endangered ecosystems are in space habitats, hooked up to a carrier type ship. But the lease runs out so the crew is ordered to jetison and distroy them. Then bring the ship back. But you know what? One guy goes nuts and kills the others to stop them, but gets injured and programs the repair bots to take care of biodomes before he dies

the theme song was so cool...

i SOOOOOOO much wanted the action figures and space ship toy when i was a boy..
my friend had it and i insisted on playing with it everytime i went over there so
much he stopped inviting me over... :( hehe

Don't forget Blake's 7...
... because that would be sacrilege!

Silent Running - that bit with the little robot being blown off the hull, leaving just his leg behind, always makes me cry. And that bit where that guy crashes into the other little robot who ends up crippled for life. And that bit where the little robot is sent adrift on the last habitat with only his little watering can for company. Man, that is the saddest movie I know. :(

But that's not TV. Hey, nobody's mentioned Buck Rogers in the 25th Century yet! The Gil Gerard version. That's how people dress IMTU. ;)

I agree with the Firefly that had a Traveller feel.

I also thought Earth 2 had some great Traveller like stuff to it.

One that was interesting was Moonbase 3. I also thougth Farscape did a good job in some areas of following the Traveler feel in my mind.

Most of the rest already listed I agree with.

IMTU, the modes of dress are less Buck Rodgers and more oBSG (and Star Wars).

Buck Rodgers was a good show for the first season.... season two? ugh.

I loved Buck Rogers!
It had not one..but 2 sexy chicks..and one was exotic and wicked and....ummm
the model work wasn't bad.

I can beleive noone has said anything about

Wild Wild West
McHale's Navy
Alias Smith and Jones
Q.E.D
Bearcats!
The Avengers
Laredo

The show doesn't have to be sci-fi to be able to influence Trav, after all.
