One of travellers best things (selling points) was the advanced character gen. ya know not only vaguries but service branches medels schools etc.
problem was that it took away a bit of free will. early on when house system came about we combined twilight/2300/traveller and added a skill buying approuch. way it worked was what was rolled on charts could be bought as a primary skill, all particular skills of service could be bought as a secondary skill, all others as of course non-realated ie.. triple price this worked pretty well. example:
character in Army(infantry) rolls special duty commando school. character has Edu of 12 giving 3 skill points. all commando school skills can be purchased as primary (1/2 price), all branch and army service skills(army life,infantry,officer/nco as applicable) are purchased as secondary (full price) and any other skill was as non-related (double price).
another item of note was if the player did not have enough points to purchase at laest a certain amount of commando skills at at least level-1 he fails the course in which in this case he looses all benifits of the school (he cannot go into commando branch)

We've never had a problem with the extended chargen tables. There's enough choice between careers that you can usually get something like the character you want.

Of course, it's also easy to pick & mix skills, so the chargen is one of the few things which never really got converted to BRP in our games ... ;)
