Classic Traveller Combat?

If he rolled a 12 instead, that's 7,7,7,7... a likely kill.
Given that the weapon under the original rules was a 4d6 weapon, the max damage could be limited to 6,6,6,6 - still pretty lethal, but with a cap on the maximum.

Like your system, BTW. I've been casting around looking for a good CT/MT type system, may give this a go.

6 Terms, lucky on skill rolls...

Seriously, I've had several Bk4 characters with skills into the 6-8 range.

Combat Rifleman is usually the choice.

One of the things MT did for my players was force them away from one-skill-wonders...
I haven't used advanced chargen in a long time, but I don't remember seeing Skill 6-8 on a regular basis.

In fact, I think the highest skill character I've ever seen with CT is a Skill-7 dude, and that was once, a long, long, many moons, time ago.

It depends a lot upon how monomanical one's foucs is.

Given that in 6 terms, one can have up to 30 skill levels: 6 promotions, 24 yearly skills (average closer to 18), and more if sent to schools.

Hm...not doubting you. It's just that it hasn't been my experience. In my Classic Traveller games, I've typically seen skills run 0-5, with the occasional Level-6.

Only once, in the decades I've been playing CT, have I seen a Level-7 character. That was an NPC I rolled up about 20 years ago. Other than that, the highest I've seen is Skill-6, which does pop up from time-to-time. Heck, I've got a Skill-6 in my gaming group right now.

For example, here are the major PCs in my game. I'll list all thier combat skills and their highest skill. You'll see that they are typical of what you would find in Classic Traveller published materials.

Do you enforce the Int+Educ max for skill levels that is mentioned in the Merchant Prince Book?

I recall a cap on skill levels of int+ed in MT

I do this;
if a skill roll puts the total over int+ed, then player decides whether to simply take it as skill=0, or reduce a skill level from one he already has ( skill gets rusty from non-use ) to make up for it.

in such a system, a really high skill level might indicate an idiot savant who is nearly perfect at one thing, but is practically clueless about other things.

Prospero: Not in CT...

... but I do in MT.

My typical PC in CT is prohibited from using Books 4-7 for character generation... simply because a CT basic character can get at most 6 skill levels, and that is BLOODY rare (1st term army with commission and promotion... 4 rolls, plus rifle and SMG) with a more normative 1-2.

Most CT Bk4/5/6 characters I've seen wind up with 4 terms and at least one level 4+ skill.
