deckplans

I am. I can't comment on the TNE stuff, having just come in during the mongoose and T5 era. I gather deck plans are generally used with minis? At any rate, some idea what my free traders or scouts look like would be great. I guess they're not Enterprise-style, with saucer sections and all. ;)
Yeah not like Enterprise.

T20 and Mongoose have been great at introducing people to Traveller over the past decade plus. However, Shonner is completely correct. The same deckplans get re-spun by the companies over and over. Mongoose pushed for more deckplans in designs which is great. However, larger ships have still suffered.

Everyone,
All in all we've had an interesting poll. Sure a few things could have been worded differently. However, about 50% are looking for deckplan improvements over CT plans. The rest are happy to with CT plans or anything really. This is very interesting. There are those that look for something better and many are happy that we have anything at all. I see the frustration of both groups.

I like variety in deck plans. If I can find the time, I plan on making more starship deckplans. Maybe some planetary ship deck plans to. Time is what I need. Sadly, there are only so many hours in a day.

If I am paying $ for a standalone ship book. It require: 1) completely accurate specs. 2) High end, color deck plans 3) low end, line art deck plans usable with mini's.

Otherwise, I have zero reason to pay money. I can do 1 & 3 VERY easily myself.

I'm actually more interested in a great description than in great stats or deckplans - better to sell it to players. Granted, I do want good stats and reasonable plans for RP purposes.

Oh, the poster above me is a spammer and I got a permissions error preventing me from reporting it.

no deckplans

To those that don't use deckplans? Do you prefer descriptions or just stats?
Any reason you don't use deckplans?

To those that use deckplans?
What is your favorite deckplan in any system that you have found and use with Traveller? And why is it your favorite?

I prefer descriptions coupled with stats, and generally don't use deckplans except for tactical situations.

Standard descriptions?

While on the subject of descriptions, are their any good descriptions of standard designs, i.e. free traders, etc. They'd help me visualize a lot. :)

would an interactive infocom text adventure style you can virtually take a textual walk through help? I want to relearn inform 6....

Definitely

Haha. :) That would be great. I've tried to learn Inform (6 and 7) off and on for years but always got sidetracked by other things.

Hi,

I was perfectly happy with the old style deckplans I think Azhanti High Lightning was my idea of brilliant graphics.

That said I appreciate the quality of the illustrations in the new 4 edition D&D
and Warhammer 40K, so I think the younger market has an expectation of higher quality graphics than me, my nephew certainly does.

Regards

David

The Poll space is limited.

Here are some of my suggested levels:
High Quality: Ryan Wolfe (who is on this site from time to time) has his Future Armada series which are not specifically for Traveller. Or the Firefly from the Firefly RPG.
Good Quality: MT (Assignment Vigilante), T20's Merc Cruiser are a step up from the original CT deckplans. CT AHL and Snapshot may be the beginning of that step up.
Basic Quality: CT books like Safari Ship, Leviathan and Kinunir. FASA's Adventure class.
Bad Quality Plans: T4 Starships or GT Starships' Tigress

Any other examples of Good or Bad plans? Or other viewpoints welcome?

That is an interesting idea to the poll. Age does make a difference! Yes. I've seen the 40k stuff and it is good.

I'm a bit torn on my favorite deckplans. One of the reasons I asked everyone else. I appreciate the AHL because it was the largest ship...something sorely lacking.

I started working on one of these, but using Inform 7 - much easier. Unfortunately, as usual, I'm suffering from 'too much hands on my time' syndrome, so it never got completed. Maybe after I get the November issue out, I'll go back to it.

I think of my deck plans as average. I doubt they'll ever be considered better than that. When I retire I might have more time to work on them, and they might improve. Time will tell.

I read part of the Inform 7 web site. I played the Adventure text game on my Amiga A1000 computer back about 1989. It was a conversion of the DEC Fortran game.

Sometimes, you get a book of deckplans, but there is no illustration of the exterior of the craft. And, sometimes, the deck plans do not match the illustrtion.

The minimum quality of deckplan that I like to see for Traveller is along the lines of these illustrations.

Example 1.

Example 2.

Example 3.

I like to see a grid to use in tactical combat, if needed, and I like exteriors like THIS SHOT, as well as sexy shots LIKE THIS.

I do not like the old plain-Jane deckplans from GDW (as Mongoose as adapted), LIKE THIS ONE, THIS ONE, OR THIS ONE.

My biggest desire with regards to deckplans is to see them like THIS SEXY THING.

And, man, if Traveller deckplans looked LIKE THIS AMAZING THING, I'd be in deckplan heaven.
