Errata - that difficult subject

Which reminds me: has anyone ever derived the tables back to their formulas? It has struck me that it would be much easier to spreadsheet formulas than table after table after table...

Dear Folks -

Problem is, they're based on a base table (CPR Guns), then a formula is applied to the data based on a bunch of other tables (TL, gun type, etc etc).

And the original table isn't linear; it has breakpoints as you go down the rows.

Probably needs to be put into a spreadsheet database with a nice front-end... didn't someone do this already? (Actually, they did, I just can't remember the URL) ;)

I would be more interested in formulas for other pieces, like how they came up with the numbers for the optimized screens, and that sort of thing.

Some of MT goes back to...more tables, since Striker used custom design processes for some things, but not all things, and it also didn't really address starships except as a kluge. Most vehicle-scale systems (including the weaponry) in MT have direct precedents in Striker, however.

As for easier, it depends. In the age of computers, I can live with design systems that have "access" to extensive formulae, but for speed of design I'll take tables. MT design is actually *very* fast once you mentally edit out the tables that don't apply to your goal, and is, as far as I'm concerned, the pinnacle of presentation in starship design systems for Traveller. They *never* looked or flowed better than MT, before or since, even if they produced "better" results. The combination of the table for the need at hand wrapped by just enough text to cue you to procedure, and typically constrained to one or two facing pages per step, all with a chapter preceeding that took care of the "read once" questions, has not been bested yet.

That you can relate weapons and armor back to Striker to fill in perceived gaps is a bonus.

Am reviewing....

I found a chart in Challenge magazine (61 - Equalizer Project) that Terry McInnes did adding Heavy High-Velocity Guns to MT. It extends the table 22 on pg 77, adding 32,34,36,38,40,45, & 50 cm guns and the ammo to go with them. The chart doesn't go past TL8, but that makes sense, because by TL 8 there are faster, more lethal ways to hit the target.

Do we want to add stuff from the CT aliens module that never made it to MT?
Looking through my stuff, there was a lot of things left out, World Gov Types, Naval & Scout base designations, and trade classifications. I am sure most of this would have been updated had DGP continued the Aliens books, but since they didn't, why not go ahead and add it to the core books?

I have got a few things written up that I'll be sending along shortly.

Thanks again for all of you hard work on this.

The article in Challenge #61 (Wind & Wood, Steel & Steam) is listed in the errata document as an "Expansion" to the rules. If it's obvious that an article in Challenge (or Travellers' Digest, with RS's permission) corrects or fixes a problem in the rules, then I'll consider adding it. But that article is clearly an expansion, so (for now) I'm simplying referring interested parties to the article rather than inserting it as errata.

The CT Aliens material probably goes the same way... it's really NOT errata.

Page 52, steps 10a - 10c, columns 3 -7 are Special Handling Characteristics. The number listed, (6+,9+, 10+, etc) are used if a questionable cargo-handling situation arises. See pg. 49, "Special Handling Characteristics", for details.

Libris: the errata you're questioning is from Challenge #36. I don't question the primary sources too much...

Several things from sfchbryan:

K'kree and Meat: one example of the fact that I need to finish my MT Aliens doc. I'll start another thread here shortly on this subject...

Special Handling Characteristics: I always thought this was obvious, but after looking it over, there is a clarification needed here somewhere.

Data to Electronic: You missed Writings (data) as well; but I'm not sure this is errata -- why the change? The table indicates that instead of it being stored on paper, it's stored as data.

I was just looking at these as clarifications. In my referee's manual, I just added Special Handling Characteristics above the types. I had missed that, so I figured if I missed it, someone else might.

Changing data to electronics was similar. The word Data has several meanings, and I thought electronic was a better fit.

An MT Aliens thread would be very, very good...

On a related note, I am almost done merging your errata with my electronic copy of my Referee's Manual. The ship design charts section is getting much, much bigger...

wait until you start trying to merge some of the material from the articles into your books... Or trying to fit the Wet Navy and COACC design sequences into the Referee's Manual.

On a related note, I am almost done reformatting the "COACC Special Weapons" article that Terry McInnes wrote. According to him, it was submitted to, but never published in Challenge magazine. He then posted it to the TML.

It is about 5 pages & adds nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons (oh my!) to COACC.

That is what I am doing & it is why this has taken so long. The text section is 48 pages by itself (so far). The charts are another 50 or so. On the other hand, I only have about 5 pages of charts to go & then it will be completed.

Then I can start on the Player's Manual and then....
FSOSI!

I kept the COACC information in it's own book at the moment, but that is subject to change.

I have finished formatting the COACC supplement by Mr. McInnes. It is 4 pages. I'll be emailing it to you in a few minutes.

Another note about the power output in the fusion rockets. Somewhere in the TML, Mr. McInnes stated that the power output was based on the square root when it should have been the cube root.

Now I just got to find the message again. Then we can rerate a good chunk of COACC. Going through the TML, there seems to have been a lot of hate and discontent about COACC, but I am sure It can be fixed.

Last item for the moment. Where would you suggest putting TCS info into MT? I am kicking around the idea of adding the revenue section, shipyard section, into FSOSI, and have the construction info & refit section replace the construction time paragraph on page 61 of the Referee's Manual (That paragraph is a waste of ink.).

Another article to add to the Expansion section:

Mercenary Supermarket (Challenge 68) - adds Grenades, Grenade Launchers, Mines, some low tech armor & best of all, a flamethrower.

Because every ship should have a flamethrower in the ship's locker.

Page 79 Step 31 CPR Laser Guidance reads: All CPR guns (mortars, low, and high velocity guns) can have laser guidance for direct and indirect fire.

Should read: All CPR guns (mortars, low, and high velocity guns can have laser guidance for direct fire.

Can't use a Line of Sight (LOS) targeting system for indirect fire.
