CT Only: Favorite Classic Traveller ship(s)

IM(various)TU(s) I did variants of the type-S with faster manoeuvre drives and/or more payload, which make them desirable for various parties to use or modify. This made for a whole bunch of variants with different payloads - ambulances, executive transports, patrol craft with uprated power plants and weapons etc.

IMTU I designed the Type S at a higher TL (13) which allowed both a fast (4-G) and a long (J-4) version. The fast version was just like the Bk 2 version, but with 4t of cargo. The long version was very cramped, with either one stateroom and 4t cargo, or two staterooms and no cargo; no air/raft either.

The fast scout was an upgrade available on mustering out to scouts of exceptional service (multiple rolls of "Ship" when mustering out). The long version was a "frontier X-boat" for places without X-boat tenders. It was not available as a mustering out benefit.

Sure it can. With an ablative shield and parachute set. Once. With questionable results re: the suspension and functional aspects of the interior.

Good point.

Actually a time back I suggested a suitably equipped ATV could act as a life-boat if such was mounted on an 'escape-abandon ship' cradle, such possessing either chemical engines or limited-performance gravatics for purposes of local space travel or controlled re-entry.

Said cradle did have an ablative shield and auxiliary parachutes, the ATV itself however was 'hardened' against cosmic radiation, had expanded duration life-support and additional power reserves.

A given inclusion of a rescue transponder and deployable-colapsable airlock for obvious reasons.

Don't believe the addition of cold-sleep capsules had been considered.

Hehe, it would appear both our tongues are firmly planted in cheek.

More a reaction to the human reentry package rule then anything, which I'm guessing was a reaction itself to the surfing scene in Dark Star.

I'd like to think Doolittle made it to the surface safely but that's just sentimental dreaming.

Wow, was that movie really from 1974 ?

You don't quite understand vector movement, do you?

I said likely, not impossible.

Pirates going too fast can be just as much an intercept problem as going too slow, and most pirate vessels are in the 3-4G range.

They overshoot, ship's boat heads in another direction, or match vee with the yacht and not potential escape vector of the boat, that can be a mismatch too.

They also have the problem that the ship's boat could be a decoy, and the prize ransom is still back on the yacht. They will have to choose well.....

Most key item for a yacht using that method to ensure safety is to have the military/scout sensor fit so they have maximum warning of the pirate's vee. If they can't arrange for it to be installed in the ship itself, then a detached duty scout as escort. Getting that 600K warning is BIG.

The bigger issue is to-hit ranges and larger computer advantages in CT. The pirate gets below that 250K -2 range, the ship's boat isn't likely to survive the laser fire unless IYTU HG small craft/agility type modifiers are in play, or there are a helluva lot of sandcasters loaded on that thing.

Favorite Ship

I have two the VP Corsair (400dton) and the Mercenary Cruiser (800dton). If I had to pick one it is the VP Corsair... the illustrations in JTAS 21 are inspiring even 30 years later.

Its a really difficult question because there were a heck of a lot of great ships in Classic Traveller helped a lot by some great design, ships plans, and illustrations. I love so many of them. But the favourite has to be the Type S Scout for its simplicity and purity of its form. Its a classic indeed.

Just re-doing my favourite past-time after years of computer gaming..........Classic Traveller solitaire trading in the Spinward Marches. So it has to be a type A Free Trader.

Keep on top of the overheads, pick your routes carefully, speculate and at all costs, avoid pirates. Earn enough to upgrade the engines to j-2 and the rest ofvthe universe opens up.

Ahhhhh, the good old type A.:)

Anyone have any plans for the 3,000 to 5,000 ton cargo ships seen in The Traveller Adventure? Or any specs for ships of that size that they are willing to share?

Some of my favorites have already been mentioned (Type-S, Explorer Class Scout) but I think my all time favourite is the Iylvir Class Imperial Navy Light Assault Troop Carrier from IISS Ship Files. I really liked the idea of using a Navy surplus troop carrier as a tramp freighter.

I think the problem with the Type R is that unless you are on a Main, the ship is useless since it only has J-1. I change that with my in house rules where fuel requirements for jump require 5% rather than 10% per jump number, that makes a Type R and Type A much more useful.

I do the same with my house rules for Traveller, along with looking at some of the alternative drives mentioned in various science-fiction series.

When it comes to my favorite ship, it is the Annic Nova. I am not sure if that has been mentioned. I am working up a sister ship, the Annic Falcon. for posting.

That could be interesting.
