Food and Consumables For Starships

you could use the cost and space and such of a lab to cover say a fancy kitchen like in a 5 star restaurant usefull for hi passage pasengers.

And as for being infected Blthazarr there are some extra things in GURPS space you can use in GURPS Traveller though accounting for power is fun
 
Why the assumption that 1/2 to 2/3 of the freezer/storage space is access?
in aircraft carrier supply spaces stores are organized in one of two ways. for single-kind items, like toilet paper, the storage room will be packed solid with no interior access. for most other things, like replacement parts, the storage area can include large amounts of interior access and containter volume.

food would probably be in the toilet paper category - 'cept for the captain's food, of course.

As a CT/MT player, this interests me. Any idea about how many dTons, kW, actual tons weight, etc. this might take up?

Simple use the same stats as a laboratory vol 112 M^3 mass 50 T price 5mcr(( this is for the ovens,refrigertors,cooking gear and a dry pantry say 28M^3 with 1/3 of it acess)) pwr 0.8 MW note this is strait from T4s Starships I merely used the inf on a laboratory and made it a FOOD laboratory

Described as a compact food prep area with the ability to prepare 770 lbs of food at a time. The mass and cost include a full pantry of the appropriate TL.There is enough space to make 28 meals at a time.
 
Given the above 3kg man-day requirement (assuming military/scout crew or Middle Passage...no Barons aboard), you get about 333 man-days from a ton of space, depending on packing, which is very decent.

I kind of assume that small spaces between bulkheads or along fuel spaces are set aside for such storage...the L-Hyd might even give you a free reefer effect!


At that rate, a large crew could survive a LONG time on a few tons of supplies.
 
In Wernher von Braun's the Mars Project there is tables on how much supplies he thought was needed for a trip to Mars and back. I don't remember the exact values (and I don't have the book with me right now), but a substantial part of the total mass assigned for food was for the packaging of the food (6 ton of food + 1 ton of packaging, or something like that).

I'll check the values and post them later.

In that case Your Excellency, we will buy the more Expensive supplies. At 2-4 more expensive.
I did that in one game, standard rations 6 days a week,1 VERY fine meal on sunday. (At 10x normal cost.) and Champagne on Jump entry. ,<Wink>
As a trader, you can buy stuff REALLY cheap, if you know what to ask.

Sure enough, in a situation where every gram counts, you'd want bulk foods, with lots of preservatives. Soy-Krill paste, anyone?

Ok, now I've checked the values, and the food packaging consumes more payload than I thought.

From Wernher von Braun's The Mars Project:

He's counting on 10 persons / ship for 260 days + reserves.

Food: 1.2 kg per day = 3.5 ton
Food wrappings: 1 ton


Some other interesing numbers:
Oxygen: 1.235 kg per day = 5 ton
Potable water: 2 kg per day (1.6 kg per day can be recovered by the life support system)
Personal baggage: 120 kg per person.


The book is interesting, although pretty technical.

A better and more modern book , would be "The Case for Mars." I dont have a copy handy,but he (the author. Sorry,mind blank)give a detail breakdown on the various consumables needed for the crew. It's definately worth reading.

Space rations would only need to be:

Compressed SPAM
Tang
Powdered Eggs (don't forget the saltpeter)
And a water tank

Actually to save space, most things probably would be dehydrated or powdered - and probably gravitically compressed. Take a look at Backpacker magazine sometime - it's got great ideas for this type of thing.

I have friends who have a nice dehydrator. Works well for curries, chili, stews, etc. OTOH, you do still need water to make them at the other end.

Gravitic food compression? Yes, that's just what I'd want... food types indistinguishable from one another due to them all being reduced to a fine paste. No thanks!
