General Gashiini - Minor Race

CaptRet

SOC-12
Does anyone have Gashiini in their Traveller Universe ? They are in the travellerrpg wiki (Imperial Encyclopedia) as a "technologically sophisticated" minor non-human Terragen race, with a humanoid appearance, genetically engineered by the Ancients "from a giant prehistoric ape." I guess that is a reference to the Gigantopithecus Blacki (which may have died out circa 100,000 years ago, have stood up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) tall, weighed as much as 540 - 600 kg (1,190 to 1,320 lbs), and was related to the orangutan). I suppose that the uplift could make it a chimera, with some hominid chromosomes added to kick it into sapience. Like orangs and other great apes today, they could have low birth rates. I could see them having been left on a "reserve" world (perhaps an Amber Zone - any candidates ?)
And what does "technologically sophisticated" mean ? Industrial Age ?

As I like Traveller-related miniatures , I'm thinking it gives a basis for using one of the less grotesque Warhammer ogre miniatures.

Could be fun to roll one up. I would think that an 8 - 9 foot hominid uses 3 (or even 4) dice for strength and endurance, vice the usual 2 ? I imagine that social status in an interstellar sense could be lessened (minus 2 roll ?)as well. I could see various idle nobles wanting one or two as imposing bodyguards. But a lot of equipment would have to be custom-built to take into account their size.

Yes, I have seen or heard of several referees using these sophonts in their universe.

As a side note, I bet that equipment for Aslan males or the larger Vargr subspecies would fit this Terragens fairly handily.

Shalom,

I think that even Aslan armor wouldn't fit them. Aslan stand about 2 meters tall and weigh about 100 kg. The root stock for the Gashiniini supposedly stood up to 3 meters tall and weighed five times as much as an Aslan. So the Ancients would have had to have shrunk them down by about a third. Assuming that this didn't happen, they would be about as much taller than Aslan as Aslan are than most Humans.

I am curious about these larger Vargr subspecies. I know that the Vargr Extents has various offshoots of the Vargr. Query where is the information about these larger Vargr ? I know that one wargamer on another blogpost has both standard and larger Vargr in his forces.

I found a reference t the Urzaeng Vargr in The Alien List contained on the below website:

http://www.republicofnewhome.org/oldlair/games/traveller/worlds/explore.html

The below is from that reference (query if this is canon ?), the Urzaeng are a Vargr subspecies living in the Gzaekfueg Sector

Race: Urzaeng (Vargr)
Status: widespread Vargr minor
Home world: probably in Gzaekfueg sector
Colonies In: throughout Vargr Extents

Taller and more powerfully built than humans, these massive Vargr can
take on Aslan males in unarmed melee. Originally bred for guard duty
and menial labor, they tend to lack full mental faculties. (Big &
dumb). See "Vilani & Vargr.
