Granicus, Pirate Haven?

Bill,
Thanks for your thoughts.

However, here is my dilema. If I am going to use Granicus, as published, (And since the GT and QLI versions don't fit well together and the campaign is to be set in either 993, in Gateway Domain or 1101-05 Spinward Marches, I am going to pretty much ignore the GT material.

It isn't a question of whether it is there, it obviously is. However it doesn't work, with the presented stats vs, the text description. Further locating a "Pirate Haven" where it is inconvient to Trade Routes, virtually impossible to reach with the majority of merchant ships, (J1, J2), virtually impossible to reach with canon Corsairs (J2, J3). Has only one route in or out for J2-3 ships. Has no routes for J1 ships. It makes it less than ideal as a bolt hole, a place to dump stuff onto the market, a place for repairs, a place to reflag or part out ships. Now the remote location does have an advantage, it is off the beaten path so less likely for someone to go looking for you there. However, since it is apparently an open secret (at best) the disadvantages far out weigh the advantages.

Personally I was going to use Granicus and one of its residents as the target for a Mercenary ticket, but the more I looked at it, the more questions came to mind as to why anyone would use Granicus for its stated purpose.

I can justify that the Scout Service (UWP) data is wrong. (A good bribe or two might be useful to keep it wrong.) A Class D starport at TL-6 isn't going to fix anything, certainly not build new ships and/or reflag anything. However the location is the bigger problem.

Greetings and salutations,

If you set your campaign in 993 in Gateway Domain, there is a politiy called the Raidermarch. I believe that is a pirates' haven of sorts. I cannot recall totally though.

Actually more of a Pirate Kingdom. I doubt they would put up with freelancers though.

I think, especially after reading the Starfall playtest files that Starfall would be a better place to set up a local base of operations if you were a Pirate, or Pirate Cartel. User Friendly also might not be bad, but I think the GTC frowns on Piracy.

They both have easy access to trade routes, favorable local conditions, and multiple escape routes.

Raider March however might enlist 'privateers' after a thorough vetting... ;) ;)

Starfall Cluster, and the open downport city-state of Landing city..another story entirely!

more on that I am bound by law & oath not to say until it see print.

A slight problem with the cluster is that freelancers are hired by the nearby GTC polity of FAL to hunt corsairs, etc..as well as escort trade convoys. The free tradesmen however not part of this interstellar commercial combine are at their own risk however, providing ample 'meat' for the corsair-pirate cartel..IIRC.

There is also, in Ley Sector, Sham, (well wars can get a bit messy, perhaps not a good choice.)and Askhar. Askhar sounds ideal, it is close to trade routes, multiple escape routes, TL-C with a class A starport and law level 0. It sits along the main trade route between the Galean Federation and the Imperial Trade Cluster. Ideally situated for disposing of J2 freighters and as an operational base for J2-J3 Corsairs. Close to several mains and clusters.

Perhaps it is a bit obvious, and too close to the Galean Federation-Imperial Trade route. (It should be right on it.) And with the Imperial Trade Cluster only 2 J4 transits away it could be too obvious and have a Cruiser on your doorstep before you knew it was coming. Of course it would also mean your spies would notice a Cruiser preparing to move out and let them report back fairly quickly as well. Just not after the Cruiser leaves.

Quaran, in Ley's P subsector, a Hi pop TL-B, B-class port world, religious govt D Law level 0...also! Non aligned to boot!

"all's well in the name of [insert name of higher being your choice]..and credit is his Profit."

In our PbP game, we just docked in a "port royale" system in Ley's Matarishan subsector: 558-617. C star port, B tech level, low pop, no govt, no law level, on the edge of a large cluster, right next to two X-boat routes, and right on the trade route from Shanape to the Imperial Trade Cluster. Just about anything traveling between the Domain capital and the Imperial capital passes within range of this system. And lots of possible escape routes should you need to run.

You should do that. I hear it's rather good...
Well aside from missing the Imperial Subsector Capitals and a couple of minor interesting inonsistancies with UWPs, inherent in the system in the first place, I would say that rather good is a serious understatement. </font>[/QUOTE]I've got it now, and yes, it is more than good. Aside from an unplaced comma or two, some missed periods and an unclosed parenthases. But otherwise, me likey!

Granicus is a pirate haven because Steve Jackson Games published a book saying it was. We had to make a choice between altering semi-canon or going with it.

Why Granicus was chosen as a pirate haven in the first place I'm not party to.

MJD,

Semi-canon? What an absolutely delightful term!

Consider it stolen.

Have fun,
Bill

Please, please, gentlemen. The issue here isn't what to call that item, but using that item to put some holes in that pirate there - you know, the one who's not us!

I have a question, but it's better for another thread in this forum.
