Hard Space Redux

Hmm since you mentioned a good jump can actually land a ship in orbit of a target planet, is the gravity well issue with standard 2D6/Traveller jump drives less of an issue here?

Or would a target need to get far away enough still to initiate a jump?
You are correct - I just checked, and 100 planetary diameters are far beyond the moon orbit in Earth's case. So not in planetary orbit, but 100 planetary diameters from it - in case of Earth, that would be about 0.01 AU (1,274,200 km). Not too far... About 7 hours in 1-G torch travel.

Too dangerous, even compared to a fusion torch...
Are most civilian liners like interplanetary craft or something? Like you're carried by jump ship to a station and then from the station you get onto a liner?

Or can most liners jump on their own?

There are also civilian jump-capable torchships, as per Traveller traders and even a 100-ton "scout". The difference is that they're unstreamlined and carry interface craft for landing.

Will you be having your own spacecraft designed for the setting specifically?

Is the average TL of humanity's electronics here at TL14?
Electronics, cybernetics, and pharmaceuticals/biotech are at TL13. Prototypes, such as AI experiments, can reach even TL16, but the higher you go above TL13, the greater risk you're taking. ESPECIALLY with AIs.

Otherwise, technology is TL9-10. Humanity is in TL10 for only 21 years*, so there are a lot of TL9 stuff still around, including starships.

___
* Yes, I've raised that from 14, as now we're talking about 2170 rather than 2120.

Why not just take a leaf from other setting books and even FF&S and produce a bespoke TL scale for your setting and explain how the out of the box Traveller TL scale maps to it?

It's quite simple in my case - if its electronics/cybertech/biotech it's up to TL13; if not, it's TL9-10. Also, no gravitics and no reactionless drives.

So how about:
TL8 - spaceplanes, reusable BFRs, primitive cybertech/biotech, advanced AI, beginning space industry
TL9 - advanced solar panels, fission powered 'fusion' torchships, standard cybertech/biotech, primitive AGI, extensive space industry
TL10 - advanced fission powered 'fusion' torchships, advanced electronics/cybertech/biotech, standard AGI, O'Neill colonies

What's GAI and BFRs?

AGI - artificial general intelligence - sentient computers rather than AI which we have now.

BFR - the space X Big Falcon Rocket - although the popular view is the F stands for something else.

What is space warfare like in Hard Space versus say Outer Veil or even These Stars Are Ours! ?
Between torch-ships? No inertial dampers, so the crew needs acceleration couches and the "cocktail" (as in The Expanse). Combat uses missiles, lasers, and particle beams. No other high-energy weapons and especially no meson weapons, which are the mainstay in TSAO. Most likely, no space fighters, especially not streamlined ones.

I think fighters akin to combat drones may be a possibility, like those in the Night's Dawn Trilogy?

Or hmm maybe the technology is there to remote control such fighters?

No AGI yet, it's "just around the corner", a holy grail megacorporations are shooting for. Considering my sources of inspiration, this will probably not end well...
