Has Anyone Made a Million Ton Ship?

I found this one, but was wondering if anyone had designed a huge million ton starship out there? I could see them as macrolife ships or colony starships.

I think i did design one using High Guard back in the day. It's pretty easy to put one together in HGS. The way spinal mounts max out though, IIRC there's not much point going over 500K dtons for military purposes.

You could have a lot of fun designing a sublight interstellar colony ship though. It could be interesting seeing what fraction of lightspeed you could get an M-drive vessel up to. The max cruise speed would be limited by the fuel capacity more than the drive rating. I'd like to see what the fuel volume/payload capacity tradeoff looks like.

I never completed the design, but I had an idea for one as the Ultimate Luxury Liner, a Jump-capable luxury resort. I was never able to come up with a campaign idea for it, though.

If you build it, they will come.

LOL. Yeah. It'd likely need to be armed, though maybe just with turrets. But that's a lot of turret firepower. (100% sandcasters might sound nice, but I'd mix dual fusion gun turrets in as well. And nuclear dampers, too.)

Crew would be a mix of merchant and naval, I think; you'd need naval experience for the turret batteries if nothing else. And the gunners could also serve as Security, both internal and external. Hm...

A Crew campaign, a Guests campaign, or mixed?

I built one the other way around ... world with no JD technology and an 8 parsec gap to the next closest star ... built a MD ship to travel back and forth like an East India Tea Clipper. Since the rules don't say there is a limit to using the Travel formula in TTB, I saw no reason not to use it for long range interstellar trade. ;)

At some distance, it actually becomes faster than JD.

Rarely do I design TL15 ships with spinal mounts or 2000 small craft, so I am finding it easier said than done. My current attempt has 130,000 spare or cargo, but is only using 6000 hardpoints. Including flight crew it has about 5000 crew and does Jump 4 and Maneuver 3G.

I'd mix dual fusion gun turrets in as well.

In High Guard? IIRC, fusion guns are actually less efficient than triple beam laser turrets, except at particular tech level/USP combinations. Plasma guns are far worse.

Am I misremembering?

Fusion guns rate higher than beam lasers for the same turret/ep numbers, short range only but the higher rating is useful when used for missile defence or mounted on attack fighters. Plasma guns, meh...

I did a million ton dreadnaught, back in 1982 IIRC; I do not remember the specifics, other than I put ten spinal mounts on it (I KNOW that's breaking the rules). I basically said they would all share the same to hit and damage rolls. I don't recall there being a huge advantage.

More recently, I realized HGS 2.0 did not enforce the Mega dton limit, so created a small moon... :oo:

The Death Star is a large military city that is capable of jump-4.
At 10 billion dtons, it is a massive structure, a sphere 62 km in diameter.

It has a staggering 800,000 Factor-9 beam laser batteries, 500,000
100-ton missile bays, and 100,000 100-ton meson bays.

It carries 1,000,000 marines who can be landed in 4 waves of the station's
5,000 cutters, and supported by 1,000 heavy fighters.

It has a crew of 45,000,000, and carries up to a year's supplies for them.
Life support alone runs 2.34 billion annually.
It's cost was 9 Quadrillion, 6 Hundred Trillion credits (9.6x10^15 Cr).

I worked this out once, drew up a 600 dton m1 ship that could cross one parsec in eight years. spends nine months accelerating to .8c, cruises for six and a half years, spends another nine months in decel. has to refuel to return home but can carry enough supplies to make the trip. can be done.

can be done with a type-s 100dton scoutship too. attach a 200dton fuel tank to it and it can still get m1, do the same thing. have to spend most of the time in low-berth .... had a character do that once.

I've seen several. All of them were PC-built monstrosities. Only one was a merchantman.... but it was equipped with its own manufacturing on-board.

I've done one. It was designed off the idea presented in E.C.Tubb's Tuf Voyaging, a 1,000,000 ton ship that was designed to park itself over a world, and rebuild its entire eco-system, making the world inhabitable for mankind, then dropping a colony before moving on.

Long ago lost the stats, but it was about 50% bio and cloning labs, and had over 100,000 tons of hanger with shuttles.

It was a McGuffin, a leftover from a game in which it was used by a villain who was holding a world hostage. Fun game.

I'm betting that any number of us of a certain age range designed such a ship "back in the day" just because of Star Wars.

I took the Xboat tender to the limit.

I designed a J1 M1 HG Fleet drydock. Pretty easy, a lot of empty space for the docked ship, a lot of bunking, as much anti missile and shield as you can, any excess space as storage and workshop

have fun

I'm guessing this might be a good way to get people to tell me about bugs :)

My take on a multi-million ton ship. Carries 200,000 passengers and 1.6 million low passengers.

I used to play in this range with HGS all the time, as I was studying battlerider carriers across TLs.

Still would like to rebuild Eurisko...
