How do you roll stats

try this...
'modified random point buy' I've been toying with

1. all abilities bagin with a rating of 7
2. dice role to determine available point to spend, 1d8 x 1d10 (1-80 points)
3. place points as desirded
4. variant adjustment: up to 4 points may be 'shifted' amoung abilities, no ability maybe less than 1.
5. apply any other species/racial/gm restrictions.

the "avaerage man" will have about a 10 in abilities.

Seems to be little consensus
which is no problem. It is interesting how many allow a reroll of 1's (especially on 4d6, wusses, can't ya all play a stat below 10 ;) ). Some of my favourite characters were rolled "honest", 2d6 in order for grand old CT, 3d6 in order for D&D. Sure I had some pretty low stats in some cases, and high ones in odd spots (my fave, an AD&D Human Fighter with a 17 Intelligence and 15 Strength, those were the high stats. He went on to dual-class as Magicuser, a classic battle-mage).

Anyway, the last little while I've been in games where either my dice are cursed or the other players are fudging rolls cause my stats are nice and averaged while they have uber characters. So I think* for my T20 game they'll all be created equal, using the Default Array from D&D 3rd, adapted to T20. They get the following scores: 17, 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8, and 7, arranged as desired. The addition of the 17 and 7 to cover the extra abilities maintains the (generous imo) average of 12 and you can bet I'll be testing all their abilities at some point so woe to them if they "dump" the low stats thinking it won't be important

* I am toying with an idea where they roll 1 (or 2) d6 per ability in order and then point buy after that to represent both the chance of birth and the desire of person.

Here's how I do it when I run a game:

93 points to be distributed between the 6 main attributes, can give you these attributes (points can be adjusted up/down by adding to one and subtracting from another)

14
15
16
17
18
19

EDU, SOC, and PSI are handled differently, so I had them rolled randomly (unless someone wanted something specific for their character - or want to be a Noble, etc...).

Later,

Scout

It's interesting to see the number of different styles of rolling stats (I use 4D6 drop the lowest, 4 sets, pick the best set, arrange in order)

But I don't really think how we roll stats is really the question. A lot of it has to do with what kind of campaign your running or what you want top play in.

Personally I prefer a more heroic/cinematic stlye of play. I like it when the characters have some exceptional abilities. If I wanted to play an unskilled no talent looser who would be the first to die in a gunfight I would just be myself. ;)

I don't think that my style of play is any better than any other, just different. Years ago left a D&D campaign where you rolled 3d6 in order and straight roll for hits. After I complained about not being able to succeed in doing anything The DM lectured me on why I wasn't a true roleplayer. Well I disagreed, I just wasn't palying the role I wanted.

If your group like to play grandiose heros and fight epic battles, more power to you. If you like to delve deep into your charcter's mind and fret over making your next rent check, that works too. It's all good. We play the games to have fun after all.

And BTW I do have two sats below 10. (Yes they are Soc and Char) But I'm having a lot of fun incorporating those low stats into gameplay.
