How many tons is a 747?

Best guess based on a standard 747-400 and using 13.5kl to represent 1 ton (per megatraveller) is a 747 is 95 ton.

Actual displacement will be slightly higher. I've base my figures on passenger & cargo volume plus fuel volume so misses quite a bit out.

Habitable volume in the shuttle is tiny, 4.87ton.

FWIW, Andrew Boulton uses a 747 on his Traveller Size Comparison Chart here:

Hyphen.

Just one of a number of goodies Andrew has gifted the Hobby with over the years.

Squinting at the footnotes, the Broadsword deckplans come in at 1,200 dTons for a 50% increase. Sheesh... I'd known that Broadsword's deckplans was broken but I'd forgotten just how broken they were!

Bill

Andrew's picture makes it look much larger then the 100 or even 200 ton ships on that site. That seems correct to me, but might not be supported by the math and stats from Traveller.

I don't have the figures handy and I may have been off or my memory wrong but fwiw I worked out the shuttle a while back and seem to recall it coming in at about 100dtons.

The ships are much wider than the 747 though. Comparing it to the 50dton Cutter just below it the 747 is about twice as long. Given that it narrows at the rear and is iirc narrower beam than height, and adding a little for the wing volume I'd say the 747 is right around 100dtons. IF the Cutter and scaling is accurate.

Keep in mind: The internal cargo, per Boeing, is 777.8 cubic meters; that's 55 Td right there. Fuel is 215 cubic meters; that's another 15 Td. THat's 70 tons, exclusive of the upper deck, machinery, engines, life support, avionics, and lost-space due to counting only container-fitting volume.
