We should do one of these that specifies the game variant. Might help tell where to focus our energies. And we need to do something to attract a younger crowd, or the game is going to die with us.

THe "younger crowd" doesn't do BBS's nearly as much as the middle aged one does.

Definitely. Over at the FB group things seem spread out a bit more evenly age-wise, but that's just a guess-timation based on eyeballing the pics. I wonder how much "kids these days" are embracing any version.

Another thread; no hijacking intended.

I'm twice the age of any of the kids in my traveller game.

The easiest way is to start with the artwork. I didn't realize it myself until a kid pointed out that nobody looked like him. I then went through my entire Traveller collection - the kid was right.

Any time I point out that over 95% of the humans in Traveller artwork are Caucasian (I counted), long time Traveller players get up in arms.

It isn't the 1970's anymore. Adapt or die.

I went to all 3 of the local game stores... I'm not only the oldest person in the game store, it looks like I'm the oldest person in the building.

Sooooooooo just this moment over at the FB group there's a poll that's live. I get it that here we trend a little older, but I expect FB is not skewed older because of the medium or venue. Here's the breakdown as of this moment:

below 20: 0
20-29: 6
30-39: 12
40-49: 54
50-59: 75
60-69: 5
70+: 2

Hmmmmmmm.

None of the under-30 Traveller fans I know FTF of are in that group. Not a one of the 6. And, yes, they are aware of it

Maybe it's just that younger players don't respond to polls like that, regardless of where. That'd be a very peculiar and interesting thing, more so with each poll in each place that seems to show the same general distribution of an aging base of respondents.

I see the same effect for D&D lists - the current late teens and early 20's types are the majority at PFS and D&D AL play, but the poll resondents tend to be 30's to 50's as the central bulge, with a heavy & long right tail.

I think the overall age of this board can be guessed simply by the use of the term "BBS".

All kidding aside, 28, here. I have bee a fan of Traveller since my friend's father introduced us to Mongoose Traveller when it was first published. I really enjoyed SF at the time, but I think Traveller lost my interest because there was little in the way of visuals to fire my imagination. (I think this, along with the depth of the system and background, is one of the main stumbling blocks for younger players.)

Now, with my friends all living down-town, I find myself looking to scratch the RPG itch online rather than in person. I remembered CotI, and came across Traveller5. Now to learn the game and find a group on Roll20 or something similar.

I haven't been on a BBS since about 1984. We gamed advanced dungeons and dragons from 1980 to 1985. I hope to get back into gaming, but my siblings aren't interested in Traveller.

Of course, I could start them off in Tunnels and Trolls, where they want to play, and they incur the wrath of a Mighty Wizard and they get gated over to my Traveller universe... could be a plan.
