I heard about FidoNet around 1995. The filk community was still using it. Never used it myself though.

FidoNet was closely tied to the early public internet. Fidonet sites were using both IP addressing and domain names by 1990; an aquaintance ran fredbox.cojones.com in the 90-94 era.

Edit to Add: Yes, I was on fidonet via Fredbox. And through it to Usenet - the Fredbox Usenet interface was much saner than the UACN Vax at Uni. of Alaska Anchorage. (The lack of comma is intentional by the organization.)

If you ever go on youtube and watch a video by The Breeders called 'Cannonball', they have a modem sound doing the handshaking in there.

There are comments trying to figure out what made it.
