Leif Ericson Scoutship

Geez...

See and the Solomani are lazy too. Shiftless, lazy, bigoted, yep that's why we the Imperium must keep them in check. :p

Well, Andrew if you stopped eating and having a life, I bet you could get it done in no time...have you considered meth?

That is simply a thing of beauty, bravo !

Omg!

Rolling on the floor, laughing my @ss off!

Oh...deep breaths, that was awesome! Now to go and watch it again and again, god I wish I had a decent set of speakers and not just some plugged in headphones...still wow.

For some reason the LE model calls to mind the 'Starfire' from a novel by Andre Norton. Perhaps it is the general shape or something. At any rate, I don't really see much of a problem using either the ship itself or its associated shuttle in a Traveller campaign. I kind of like them.

Splitting Heirs

Just my nature but if so allowed to toss a monkey wrench out in the discussion regarding the LE Scoutship in Traveller.

Still tweaking out my version of the deck plan's to said craft and while doing such had an epiphany of a kind. What if there were two different versions of this unique design ?

I see the need and practicality of the Scoutship as an ATV-combat troop ferrying vessel but why not a compact sized-scaled down 'dedicated' scoutship version ?

Simply put, this would be a significantly smaller craft as seen depicted in the original AMT model's box art, specifically designed for recon or rescue missions.

I would suggest that the large outward 'bulges' of the forward hull be replaced with transparent blisters to further suggest the observation-fire control capacity of this small ship. That said, the smaller more agile version would make quite the nimble ground attack-ground support platform with a compliment of missiles or say a belly-mounted heavy weapon.

Picture Traveller's version of the 30mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon found on real world A-10 Warthog aircraft giving the mosquito-light craft a serious sting .

To put such into a niche in Traveller perhaps the tinier variant might be classified as a 20 or 30 ton gig or ship's boat. It would make a nice escort for it's larger big brother when more eyes and teeth are so needed.

hvy fighter

Good job on your design Patron Zero.

My original thoughts based on the poster design we're along the lines of a hvy fighter. However, it doesn't fill the bay for a ship above 1500dt to meet the sizes suggested. This may be where the model and Traveller needs separate a bit more. The original scout fills the bay but set sideways 2 can squeeze in which for a 2k craft means 120kt give or take...

Here's the smaller variety.

2.5EP delivering 5 agility but what's an extra pea shooter or two when your parked.

Good job on your design Patron Zero.

My sincere appreciation for the kind words, that said the deck plan for the 'larger' variety craft is still a WIP and subject to tweaks and tucks.

When I get a chance I'll try to get a rough layout for the small version posted, such depending on finding time to doodle a bit first.

Most impressive

Hi, I'm Nyrath. I'm the author of the main Leif Ericson website.

Yes, you guys have done a bang up job adapting the Leif to Traveller. I have a few notes that you can attend to or ignore as you please.

[1] All my size, mass, and volume calculations are based on the assumption that the Leif Ericson plastic model is 1/500 scale. We all got this figure from Frank Henriquez's estimate:
http://frank.bol.ucla.edu/le.html#kitscale
In other words, the scale estimate is based on the scratches on the hull meant to indicate the doors and windows. This means that if it makes the Leif too small or too large for a Traveller type of ship, you can go ahead and adjust the scale to whatever you want. Re-figure the number of decks and you are good to go.

[2] The original model kit had a variant, it included a "laser cannon" one could glue on the nose. You can see it here:
http://www.fantastic-plastic.com/LEIF ERICSON PAGE.htm
In other words, the military version had a spinal mount weapon. I was speculating on this here:
http://www.projectrho.com/SSC/interior.html
but that's just brainstorming on my part, it is no-way "official".

[3] Andrew Boulton, your Leif mesh is very nice! When you get some nice renders worked up, I would be happy to host them on my Leif site, along with the other CGI Leif Ericsons. I created my Leif mesh in the program Blender, using the high quality blueprints from Hungry Lizard Studios. I can export my mesh into OBJ format or some other format that 3DS Max can import, if it would help you.
My renders are here:

Always liked the conning tower setup, and that it kind of looked like a Star Trek 60s ship, but that nose cone thing!
True, the nose cone is a bit over the top. But the reason the Leif Ericson looks like a "Star Trek 60's ship" is because it was designed by Matt Jeffries, who designed the 60's Enterprise and Klingon Battle Cruiser.

AMT models was hoping to cash in on the Star Trek craze with their own line of Trek-like models set in a Trek-like universe that was hopefully different enough to avoid a lawsuit from Paramount Pictures.

Alas, the kit was a flop and the idea of a series of models was shelved.

Ironically nowadays Leif Ericson kits on eBay go for hundreds of dollars.
Another model company has promised to re-issue the kit. I can't wait!
