PC ships

LeperColony

Traveller Card Game Dev Team
So, of course I know that campaigns can be set at virtually any scale. That being said, I'm wondering if I've missed any common PC ships from the list below:

Scout
Seeker
Free Trader
Far Trader
Subsidized Merchant
Patrol Cruiser (at least, in TNE. It's on the chart PCs can get)
Broadsword

Include:

  • Safari Ship (useful for more than just traditional "safaris" - the "poor man's yacht")
  • Yacht
Less legal, but also on the charts:

  • Corsair
Less useful, but also on the charts:

  • Lab Ship

Patrol Cruiser (at least, in TNE. It's on the chart PCs can get)

It's also on the chart available for PCs in T5 (for ex-Navy Officers as "detached duty", like the type-S is for Scouts).

Also the liner is in the TNE charts...

Yeah, so is the Lab Ship, the Survey Ship and the Gazelle. I think in TNE it's more about just having a "working" ship.

For the more conventional Traveller settings, I think the Liner, Survey Ship, Patrol Cruiser, Gazelle and Lab Ship would be more specialized campaigns.

Type H (Bounty Hunter) - derived from a Type SN Scout (modified Type S {arrow-head type}). White Dwarf #70 (with Bounty Hunter career write-up, basic CT format, with suggestions for use with CT advanced chargen).

I am not sure about an armed packet being uncommon. I can easily imagine a fairly high demand for a Jump-3 or Jump-4 ship for delivering high-value, high priority cargos that are small in volume. Banking data would be one item that would be high-priority and with a wish to be independent of the Jump-boat network.

Is there another mining ship other than the Seeker? Anything in Beltstrike?

There is a 200dt one in the CT Aslan Alien Module that Belters can get (but since Belters are female and it takes a male to have the necessary Pilot skill to fly it, unless the owner has a kid brother or a nephew or a boyfriend/husband or something, she will look to hire a Spacer or Wanderer, I suppose).

It is basically a Far Trader with fewer staterooms (4 total) and no vehicles, allowing for a 74dt hold capacity, and because Aslan starships do not strictly require a Medic, it can be routinely operated by a crew of two (a married couple or a pair of siblings, for example).

I should note that Beltstrike specifically mentions that pretty much any spacecraft can be used for prospecting if it has ~10dt free to carry supplies, samples, extra fuel, and so on. And mining only requires the addition of a pulse laser mounted on a hardpoint somewhere for cutting up big chunks of ore, which are then further cut down by hand and stowed aboard the ship to be later sold unprocessed. Processing equipment can eat up lots of dtonnage and energy and is probably not economical to do on-site with anything smaller than a mining platform.

I've used the Type T and not in TNE, I've also used the subsidised Liner, also not in TNE, I tend to set my games between 1101 to 1107 pre 5FW

Kind regards

David

My players actually have a lab ship - one actually mustered out with that. Not too practical, but they have it chartered for the next few months. After that, not sure how they will afford it.

Worked out well as we're currently doing Death Station (apparently lab ships are popular where they are at and being almost Halloween...). First time I've played/refereed Travellern in 30+ years.

Have them run across a forerunner (ancient) ruin, pick up some things (including an ancient starchart with more locations marked*), before complications set in.

That way they can sell some of what they have found to finance further explorations (and to generate more complications as nasty people try to steal their info/capture them/etc) for more long-forgotten loot.

* Of course, it has been so long, and the markings are so questionable (the PCs can't decipher the astronomical data fully) that figuring out where to go next is a drawn-out task itself - involving trips to universities or astrophysical societies for help/more info, etc.
