Proto-Traveller

Ah, Proto-Traveller just has to have those clunky computer rules. Oh yeah...
Ya know, about now I'd take a 1ton MCr2 model/1 if it meant:

Never having to upgrade the operating system, instead of every year or two.

Never having to deal with spam, a virus, etc., again.

Never having to go hunting for the latest gegaw or whizbang because the old one no longer works with the new OS.

Never having to track down an update to a program to run some application that worked fine a week ago, only to find the newest version isn't supported on my OS (goto step 1).

Never having to reboot the system.

...<sigh> I could go on but you get the point. My apologies for the rant. I'm in a foul, near luddite mood again, directed at this sorry excuse of technology we call computers. Give me the future today, in the way MWM presented it over 25 years ago and I'll take it.

YES! Thats in the original Imperium game. I suppose one could do a prototraveller universe with just one sector if you used that reference. Thats all it would take. 2 subsectors covering Terra/Gashidda area, 2-3 subsectors covering the rest of the empire. Call that one MICRO-ProtoTraveller. ;)
You could expand it by adding the Dark Nebula maps.

<Snip> [/QB]</font>[/QUOTE]I don't know about the technical difficulties in this, but "Proto-Traveller Lite" sounds neat. I presume the Spinward Marches wouldn't survive this premise?

I guess the core idea in Proto is that as a general rule, you are taking all the CT stuff that got "left behind" by later editions and integrating them into an unified whole. So whereas MegaTraveller gives us a Striker-Highguard-AdvancedCharGen integration, ProtoTraveller integrates Snapshot-Book2-Book1-Supp4 with the earlier adventures and (of course) a revised background based on a few odd remarks from the old books.

Essential CT Material for Proto-Traveller:

Books 1-3 (Second Edition?)
Supplements 3-4
Snapshot
Mayday
Adventures 1-4

Anything else?

the Vargr and Aslan Alien Modules... since they are refinements of older materials. Materials in Best of JTAS 1.

TTA, IIRC, just barely predates the cutoff, but I can't check, as my copy is AWOL.

Adventure 0 has the zhodani, playably, but not well done.

You need the Zhodani because they are in adventures 3-4 - but they needn't be human ;)

The chirper/Droyne thing runs through adventures 2-3.

TTA is ©1983

Mercenary perhaps?

But since Snapshot includes most of the weapons I'd want LBB4 for it could be ignored - although I do like the description of the Imperium in the intro.

Remember, the sectors are based on pre-Atlas of the Imperium, so the sources should be the same...

Enjoy,
Flynn

I've noticed some talk about sensors... lets get to those. What are we to assume is basic sensors in Classic Traveller? and has anyone worked out a seperate sensor system? I'd like to know just so my Character can have better sensors than anyone else in the game (something of a superiority complex... have to make new rules just so there is a new "better")

Well, it;s pretty clear that sensor acuity is parameter of computer model.

As for ranges, we've got "Military" and Civilian, courtesy of Bk2... ranges in LS. If we borrow from striker, we can get the same ranges MT had by extrapolation.

In general, though, sensor kits, even civilian ones, are survey capable... (Adv 0).

As an aside: AM 1 Aslan includes survey rules for blind-map exploration!

The Marches were settled after the Interstellar Wars. In other words, you can include them if you want. Likewise for the Judges Guild sectors.

What about doing the area rimward from core with the Imperium and Dark Nebula maps... but extending it with the Twilight draft maps. (One copy of this is in the back of the 'Games' big floppy book.) Twilight was going to be the super sized sequel to Imperium.

That would be in keeping with Proto-Traveller being a synthesis of all the Traveller concepts that got left behind as the line gradually took on a life of its own. (This also allows us to avoid the problems of reconciling the Solomani Rim with Proto-Core.)

Oooh. I *really* like the idea of including the Twilight draft map.

I wasn't aware it existed, as I don't have the Games reprint.

So, gentlesophonts, you have a mission. Find us a nice version of the Twilight draft map.

What is the one in the Big Floppy Book like? Could it be salvaged by someone with a lot of time and good eyesight?

The Oz, may I use your small craft design system as part of the house rules for my Stellar Reaches submissions?

Flynn wants my design rules for an article all on their own, so I will be submitting them to him and then you can either reference them as part of your house rules or requote them, depending on how much space Flynn can give your article.

As a reminder, gentlemen, I'm looking for articles of one-eight pages each. I think it would be better to publish Oz's design rules separately, and then designs based on them could reference the article (a simple sentence would do: "These designs were created using design rules from the article '<insert title here>', by <insert Oz's full name here>, Stellar Reaches Issue #X.")

2-4601, if your article is going to take more than eight pages, I'll request that you break it down into logical chunks, for ease of integrating into the fanzine.

Thanks, All,
Flynn
