Anybody old enough on this forum to know what science fiction novel this is copied from?
Funny how I remember the visual images that it gave me long ago. Good book, both authors are famous Sci-Fi writers. I recommend it if you want to know how these things work.

The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle has something very similar. I wouldn't call it exactly the same, being a different universe and all that, but a very similar tech.
There was also a slightly higher tech version that is mentioned.

Yes! I started to look at some old Larry Niven at the used bookstore down the street. I have never read his Ring World series. I might just have to pick up a copy. I'll have to look up some Jerry Pournelle also.

Yep, Niven is good, you might look out for any Kzin books by him too if you haven't read them.
For mind bending stuff buy any Philip K. Dick you come across, many of his stories have been made into movies (for better and worse) that you might recognize. Like Total Recall, Bladerunner and The Minority Report, off the top of my head. I think I'm forgetting one, maybe two?

Specifically, the Black Globe is a knock-off of the "Langston Field" found in _The Mote In God's Eye_ by Niven & Pournelle, and in a few of Pournelle's other works set in the same milieu.
Not to knock Philip K. Dick's stuff, which is great. A shame the man didn't live long enough to see the money Hollywood throws at his movies. One hopes his family does.
Far Trader: "Paycheck" was one you missed from that list. I'm sure there are more, one seems to pop up every few years or so.

Yes I love Bladerunner the movie, but I have never been able to bring myself to read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" I didn't know much history about Philip K Dick himself.
Another unfortunate sci-fi writer whose stuff I love is H. Beam Piper. The cover art done for his cosmic computer is probably the vision I always aspired to in a traveller universe
