Reasons to leave this planet

three words...

LOCATION...
...LOCATION...
......LOACATION !!!

We are stuck in such a backwater location, the alien-inbred-hillbillies crack jokes about us !!!

***if only I could find that scout ship that is frozen in the artic ice, I'd be GONE !!! but, all I keep finding are those D@#$% fighters and bombers from WWII---SHEEZ!!***

Well, there's the "Get away from those who don't think like me" bit, but you left out the converse, also well covered: "Get away from the people who hate me for not thinking like them".

I know I fall into group-2... couldn't care less what other people do, but the idea of being "idologically clensed" by someone for having my own opinions sounds like a really bad way to spend an afternoon.

The Fermi Paradox,
or not to be here when the the Berserkers arrive.

Most versions of the Drake equation result in dozens of technological civilizations in this Galaxy that should be detectable. Some very old and large, so even if they are far away they will make a racket.

Where are they? Either they are keeping very quiet or the lifespan of technological civilizations is very short. Either option is ominous, and one answer is that something kills noisy young civilizations. Like ours.

Earth: Mostly Harmless

We need to get off this planet to try to revive our countries' social and technological stagnation. To not do so, even on the basis of "having problems here," sounds (to me) insanely suicidal.

Chrisdaddy,

When you said...
You can make fun of all the rest, but when you insult Mad Magazine you're just gettin' mean.
That kind of talk is uncalled for!!!
... I knew you were kidding, right? Right?

Or haven't you ever noticed the resemblance between William F. Gaines and the Vogon Captain from the Hitchhiker's BBS series? ;)
