Scout?

Any rumors about this book? I'd very much like to have it, and it's supposed to be released this month, but it's no where to be found.

On the Mongoose forum, Matt Sprange announced that Scout is at the printer and should be
delivered to Mongoose any day now - and that was a couple of days ago.

And the errata, too.

That's the one thing that has stopped me from picking up any MGT. Living in Japan there is no way I want the hassle of trying to return an errata-ridden book to the merchant concerned - so I won't be getting any MGT until I can actually pick the books up and look before buying.

I dunno why the stuff goes out with errors in the first place. Don't they proofread? It's gotta be cheaper than a returns policy.

Hell, if they're that short-staffed, get them to send the stuff to me - I'd probably proofread it in exchange for a copy and a mention in the credits, and I'll bet I'm not the only one.

From the looks of it and the bugs in the last "big" publications like HighGuard it looks like Mongoose (still?) has a serious problem with quality control. The errors in the books, both layout and spelling are quite obvious and should have been caught before delivery. We are not talking minor spelling errors here we are talking spelling errors big enough for a non-native with less than sterling spell-checking sees on first reading and layout-errors that jump in your face simply browsing the pages like theblockoftextwithgraybackgroundandnowhitespace or the missing/wrong ToC.

With GURPS Traveller as the last Traveller version I played before Mongoose
Traveller, I really cannot complain about the production standards of Mon-
goose Traveller. True, they can and should be improved, but compared to
GURPS Traveller (not to mention some even much worse other Traveller ver-
sions), I find them within the acceptable part of the spectrum. :)

The issues that caused this have now been dealt with - as you will see from the likes of Beltstrike, Scout, etc.

Will they find the bodies? :)

@rust

What problems (except for the Spinward Marches Book) are you refering to? We are not talking "how canon" is it but "how well proof-read, layed out and printed is it" types of errors.

And, no offense, Matt, but you've been saying that for several products now. Like since MRQ was released.

A long history of obvious errors not caught.

Plus the issue, with the electronic editions, of using raster images of the deckplans at resolutions too low to be useful.

To be absolutely fair, the vast majority of our work is error free - where there are issues, we endeavour to resolve them as quickly as possible, as any good publisher should (and, to be doubly fair, I feel we go much further than any other publisher would consider - we have bucked the 'bottom line' to ensure our customers have the best service we can provide more than once).

We continue to strive for perfection and while we cannot promise it, we do guarantee our books - again, something few other publishers do.

I will say that I shipped High Guard and Mercenary back to MGT and they sent updated editions and promised a copy of Scouts when printed. I got the address from their forums and shipped them in blind (no asking for permission, RMA number, or whatever, just a letter saying I wanted new reprints and a copy of Scouts). Turn around was quick.

This impressed me enough that I'll continue to buy their products. I'm sure it's economically painful to provide this level of customer service, so I would hope in these uncertain times they would implement the quality control necessary to avoid these problem in the future.

My copy arrived today and for those interested here are my first impressions.

The first thing noticed on viewing the contents page is that there is nothing in this book about world generation or planetary cultures. This is no Book 6 rehash or updated World Builders' Handbook. This may disappoint some but what is here is very exciting.

We start with some Scout careers. Nothing spectacular here but the addition of the SpecOps Scout is fair enough. In addition we have Contact; Courier, Survey and Exploration Scouts. There does not appear to be any new skills involved.

Next we have Scout Mission. Nice. What happens to those detached duty scouts when they call in to a planet with a scout base? Find out here. An excellent source for a few adventure ideas. There is also a nice section on Scout bases (though I feel the A-E classification may be a might confusing for some)with a completely written up base with personnel sketches.

A massive equipment and ships section with all sorts of goodies some of which even come with a "Not Available in the Third Imperium" caveat. Modular ships, various sensors, sniffers and vehicles. Some great stuff here. There may be a couple of lemons hiding in there but nothing screams at me.

There is a small section on system cartography which seems to be an abstract extended system generation with little or no science behind it. Handy for an off the cuff system detailing but the hard core, hard science obsessives will dismiss this out of hand. In the same chapter is some nice chrome in the form of First Contact and Survey protocols.

Next a chapter on the IISS. This is not a rehash of old material such as found in other 3rd Imperium works, this contains much that would be considered new background. Love it or hate it folks.

Lastly a large chapter on survival. looks interesting but I've only skimmed this and am yet to get a firm impression.

Overall I'm pretty leased with this at first; some nice art, plenty of content and looks to be an overall winner for me. Some minor negatives (some bleed on bold type, becomes fuzzy). As my group are now using MGT with houserules this is a nice addition. Next Please!
