Maybe they were trying to dip their own ore from the volcano and accidentally got too low?

You don't always land where you aimed, and sometimes, you don't aim where you scanned.

I can definitely see some odd failure or another leading to a ship coming down in the wrong place at the wrong time (and maybe not necessarily in a fully controlled manner as well)

Or, the ship was in an underground facility, and the players (or the villain) did something to set loose the oh-so-near-by magma before they could clear into blue sky?

If a starship fell into a volcano, would it melt or would the structure need to be built to withstand such high temperatures anyway?

I never was any good at physics!

Heat resistant? Or melt-proof? Hard to decide.
