Howdy gentlefolk.
I am running my second session of a new Traveller campaign next week, and it will be the first use of combat (at least as I foresee it). I have read and re-read the combat sections in the TNE core book and I am flummoxed, I need an intervention.
Here are the scenarios I expect to happen in the next game, I’ll start with the PCs:
PC1: Former Marine with a Laser Rifle: energy weapon - laser rifle asset is about 13. Also has armed martial arts - large blade asset of about 10. Combat environment suit
PC2: Former Bounty hunter with a Gauss Rifle: slug weapon - slug rifle asset is about 12. Also has armed martial arts - small blade asset of about 14. BW body suit
PC3: Former Martial artist with a bow: archaic weapon - bow asset is about 14. Also has unarmed martial arts asset of about 16. BW body suit
PC4: Former Mechanic with RCV asset of 14 and Machine Gun: slug weapon – slug rifle asset is about 10. BW body suit
The first encounter is with the natives of a TL2 world: a horse mounted patrol with 6 experienced guys in Leather vest and bows and large blades, with an elite leader in Full mail, with bow and large blade.
The second encounter is with some relic (and renegade) scientists from the old Third Empirium. Only one has armour – a combat environmental suit. All of them are equipped with light weapons firing tranqs/poisoned rounds, and the woman in combat environmental suit also has a Gauss Rifle.
If I understand the rules, the experienced NPCs have 40 hit points, asset of 11 with their bows and swords and will do 3 points of damage on a successful attack. The elite leader has 40 hit points, asset of 15 on attacks and does 5 points of damage on a successful attack.
Here is my best guess at what the PCs will do in combat. With the info in so many places in the rules, I am certain I have missed things and completely misunderstood some major areas. Any corrections, explanations and clarifications would be GREATLY appreciated.
The Martial artist BW body suit
Unarmed martial arts: asset of 16. Makes a difficult unarmed combat check to hit, so target is 16. Unarmed damage is asset times str / 10, so 6x10/10 is 6. Against the guys in the jack armour, the jack absorbs 2 points of damage (armour value of one times 2). So the martial artist can do 4 points of damage per strike.
bow: archaic weapon - bow asset is about 14. I could not find stats for bows in the TNE book so I have no idea how she does damage or how much is done.
The Bounty hunter BW body suit
Armed martial arts - small blade asset of about 14. Dagger does 1d6 damage with a +1 hit. So she needs a difficult check against target of 14 with a one bonus from the dagger. Against the guys in the jack armour, the jack absorbs 2 points of damage (armour value of one times 2). So the bounty hunter can do anywhere from -1 (rounded up to zero) to 4 points of damage per strike.
Gauss Rifle: slug weapon - slug rifle asset is 12. So she needs a difficult task with a target of 2. Gauss rifle does 4d6 against unarmoured foes, and will also do 4d6 against the natives in jack and mail. The one person in combat environment suit means I need to look at penetration. The Gauss rifle has penetration 1/2/- so it has penetration 1 at short and medium and penetration 2 at long, and is ineffective past long range. The combat environmental suit has armour 1. So penetration 1 times armour 1 equals 1. So the Gauss rifle does 3d6 against the woman in the combat suit.
Former Marine Combat environment suit
Armed martial arts - large blade asset of about 10. Cutlass does 2d6 damage with a +1 hit. So she needs a difficult check against target of 10 with a one bonus from the cutlass. Against the guys in the jack armour, the jack absorbs 2 points of damage (armour value of one times 2). So the marine can do anywhere from zero to 10 points of damage per strike.
Laser Rifle: energy weapon - laser rifle asset is 13. So she needs a difficult task with a target of 13. CLC rifle does 10d6 against unarmoured foes, and will also do 10d6 against the natives in jack and mail. The one person in combat environment suit means I need to look at penetration. The CLC rifle has penetration 1/2/- so it has penetration 1 at short and medium and penetration 2 at long, and is ineffective past long range. The combat environmental suit has armour 1, but nil against lasers. So protection is nil. So the CLC rifle does the full 10d6 against the woman in the combat suit.
QUESTION: if she had been wearing combat armour with a value of 2 against lasers, does that mean the laser rifle does NO damage at all?
Former Mechanic BW body suit
RCV asset of 14 and Machine Gun: slug weapon - slug rifle asset is about 10. So he needs a difficult task with a target of 10 (since his combat asset is lower than his RCV asset). I could not find submachine gun listed so I am assuming submachine gun is the LAG, but I have no clue what the SIX LAG entries are going on about - so I have no idea how much damage he will do.
Burst fire, and what it does to combat, was beyond my ability to parse and collate all the various rules, so I did not include it in the examples above. If anyone could give me simple examples of burst fire using Gauss rifle, submachine gun and/or CLC Laser Rifle, it would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
BB
