The Kronthar

Richard

SOC-11
This a race I made ages ago, inspired by a line in an article about Jumpspace - it said that no race could manage the mathematics needed for Jumpspace without a computer technology. This race can.

The Kronthar are an insectoid race indigenous to Far Frontiers sector. They are physiologically similar to humans in many other ways, however, with two arms and legs, although their hands have six fingers instead of five. Their primary vision, however, is sound instead of vision, and they evolved from the hunters that prowl their world. To this day, they are still carnivores, eating small rodent-like creatures for preference, although they can tolerate human foods. In spite of this, they are a friendly people, slow to anger, but they can get into a racial rage and cause untold havoc. This only happened once before in their history, and little is known about it by off-worlds - they simply refer to it as a 'sad time'. Their language is just about learnable by humans, who can, with training, handle the chirps and crackles of their native tongue. They are at Tech Level 11 at the moment, with Imperial help, although they have assisted the Empire in the field of mathematics - all Kronthar are 'idiot savants', able to perform complex mental calculations by mere thought. This has proved useful to their technology in some ways, but harmful in others - they only have TL 7 computers in common usage. Whilst they have connections to the Empire, their distance has made incorporation into the Empire impracticable.

Any opinions?

Workable in GT, but seems doubtfully adaptable for other rulesets. Also, the rationale for not being able to make the calculations can be important, and prevent them from being ablew to do it as well. IMTU, due to the complexity of charging the grid, plus having to make the calcs within a tight frame of reference, means that if you take longer than the computer, the calcs are no longer valid. Gee No Jump Tapes IMTU, either. Other than that, looks cool.
