Does anyone know of an existing database that lists all the Traveller graphics? Especially one that lists elements of the pictures?
If not, it seems like it might be a useful project. I started one in a spreadsheet a while ago, but that's really not the right format. I'm imagining something where I can type in something I want to look at, and it would show me a list of all the graphics that included the element(s) I'm looking for.
Example: I type in "Vargr + Droyne + Human", and it would show me a list of all graphics that include Human, Droyne, and Vargr elements (like the cover of "Alien Realms").
At least initially, I think it would be easier to assume that such a project would NOT get permission from all the copyright holders to include the graphics in the database. So, the database would be a text-only description of the graphic with accompanying information on artist, which books/magazines/etc. the graphic appeared in/on, copyright holder, date created, elements in the graphic, related graphics, etc. It would be nice to eventually have the graphics themselves included, but that would mean a lot of communication and negotiation and would probably include some cost.
I'm deliberately using "graphic" instead of "picture" because some things that seem like architypal Traveller stuff aren't really pictures (ex: the cover of the LBB box).
I'm thinking of doing this in MS Access (as I have that available, and I've used it before), but that might not be the best for sharing with the larger Traveller community, nor be as sharable via the Internet. Another significant question would be where to host such a database. As long as it was text-only, it probably wouldn't get bigger than a few Mb (perhaps a few tens of Mb), even if it included all the graphics only vaguely associated with Traveller (like some of those in magazines like Dragon and Space Gamer, or in books like GURPS: Space).
Reactions, thoughts, comments?
