For Fading Suns I just pulled out my soundtrack from the EFS computer game, one of the best game soundtracks I've ever heard. Might work well for Traveller during the in the Rebellion. Has a dark gothic theme to the music.
I don't know what type of game it would fit, but I'd be tempted to recommend a prog-ish local band here, Corsair, just because their CD is titled "Ghosts of Proxima Centauri."
I've been listening to most of Yes's catalogue, and old Pink Floyd ("Careful with that Laser Carbine, Eugene", "Several Species of Small Furry Vargr Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Zhodani"). Some of their works inspire me still.
Quite cool. I enjoyed that track. In some ways reminds me of Spocks Beard without the vocals. A bit less groove more atmospheric its all good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_NNxUZ9EjU
So I was listening to Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 5 again, today, while browsing some SciFi concept art, and it occurred to me that some parts of it would translate very well for this purpose.
It's technically in two movements, which is weird for a symphony, but at least to me, there are echoes of four movements built into these two. Total performing time for this recording is about 35:28
I'm glad to see other GMs use music in their campaigns. I've always been the only one to do this with the people I've gamed with. I use mostly movie and videogame soundtracks. Metal Gear Solid and Hitman make for good mission music. Mass Effect has some good ambient tracks and dramatic pieces, also. I've taken from 28 Days Later, Moon, Close Encounters of the Third Kind (for humor purposes), Alien, Riddick... My list goes on. For low-tech worlds, I like to use older music (30's to 50's) to play in bars.
