I prefer the LBBs, a mixture of the 1977 edition and the 1981 edition, along with The Traveller Book. The Traveller Book adds some additional skills with respect to both atmospheric flyer and wet navy, which I like. I am working on building a skill set for wet navy, along with career progression using that.

HIWG Document 2128

Terry McInnes developed an expanded character class for wet navy sailors.

It was supposed to be part IV of Wet Navy, but for some reason, it wasn't published in Challenge magazine.

There is also one published in JG's Dungeoneer Magazine (along with a number of other classes).

LBB '77

I answered CT but Tales to Astound has shown me that even that has flavors. I first played Traveller with the '77 LBBs and still prefer that simple approach. I moved to LBB '81 without realizing it and now want to go back.
I missed the MT and TNE waves at the time; preferred T2Kv1 and Traveller 2300.
I admit I respect T4 for trying to use the nD6 in a CT-like simple fashion though it came up short. I also dabble with T5 to satisfy my "System Engineer" tinkering bug.
These days it's actually Cepheus Engine that gets my play though I find I am also drawn to parts of FATE Diaspora.

I have enjoyed Mongoose Traveller for some time now, and in the community where I do most of my gaming, it is the easiest edition to bring new players into currently. Considering that Mongoose is presently supporting the edition. Otherwise, I still adore my Classic Traveller books and still reference them often when designing adventures and Game Days. Even after 3 decades of use, they still provide a solid foundation on which to build my campaign.

I run most of my games in the Hard Times Era just following the Rebellion War and before the Virus outbreaks of TNE, which is my shout out to MegaTraveller.

I ran T20 a lot during the years when everyone and their kid sister were playing some variant of the d20 system and couldn't be bothered with the unfamiliar.

I can also endorse Hero Traveller as a door to cross-pollinate all the Star Hero material into Traveller and vice-versa.

Finally, I've been developing a greater respect for T5. It's still a steep learning curve for the uninitiated and a pretty intimidating set of rules. But once my community gets the Mongoose rules into their DNA, upgrading to the greater detail and support in T5 shows just how solid that rules-set is, and how detailed a campaign can really become.

I loved Classic Traveller because of the little black books - they'd pack up nicely in the Mayday box with the half-page forms and a few of the journals, nice before ebooks as they didn't take up a lot of room and the prices were nice.

From some of the comments in this thread, it sounds like Mongoose Traveller is something I should check out.
