Why pay more for less (from What you like about MGT)

What this topic needs is more drift and confusion...

...-Whether or not to stuff munchkins into jet engines during play and how to explain the mess to your wife when she returns home.

Some are probably wondering "What the blazes are you doing with a jet engine running during the game anyway!?"

Naturally they don't know that it's the fastest way to chill your favorite beverage(1) whatever it may be.

That said, abusing your express beverage cooler by reenacting a favorite scene from Firefly(2) while a tempting solution to mucnhkins won't really solve the problem (except in the case demonstrated) and will as noted leave a significant mess to explain.

(2) There's a scene in one of the episodes of "Firefly", "The Train Job", in which the Firefly crew are backing out of a deal. They have the bad guys tied up and the engines are running...

Mal starts this long speech..."Now, this is all the money Niska gave us in advance. You bring it back to him. Tell him the job didn't work out. We're not thieves. But we are thieves. Point is, we're not takin' what's his. Now we'll stay out of his way as best we can from here on in. You explain that's best for everyone, okay?"

Bad guy #1 defiantly replies "Keep the money. Use it to buy a funeral. It doesn't matter where you go or how far you fly. I will hunt you down, and the last thing you see will be my blade."

Mal shrugs, says "Darn", pushes the bad guy and he's sucked into the engine intake. Mal turns to bad guy #2 and starts the same speech: "Now, this is all the money Niska gave us in advance..."

Bad guy #2 interrupts with "Oh, I get it! I'm good. Best thing for everyone. I'm right there with ya."

To be entirely honest, I'm not sure anyone knows what this thread is about... I thought people were arguing over MT v. MGT. Which, I have to admit, is a novel argument since it's usually "OMG Just use CT+rules from unofficial Books 11-34 plus these house rules and its a waste!" So... it's refreshing to hear an argument about MT.

However, there also appears to be the following discussions:

-Discussion of weapon design systems
-Whether the OTU is tied into the Traveller mechanics (unsure which system)
-Whether generic systems address munchkin issues
-Whether or not to stuff munchkins into jet engines during play and how to explain the mess to your wife when she returns home.

So, it's fair to say that someone may be confused about what's going on here... :)

It startet with the simple question:

"Why do you thing Mgt is (more) useful when you own MegaTraveller"

The rest is the normal CotI way :)

In that case... I really liked MGT, and I can't emphasize that enough. But Scouts was my last MGT purchase.

Many thanks for letting us know. May I ask, what was it about Scouts you did not like, as that book is generally regarded as a good one?

Also, if the core rules worked for you, what has changed?

Overall I like Mongoose Traveller but I feel it lacks one thing. Design sequences for vehicles. I find it entertaining and a way to give your traveller universe its own flavor by making vehicles. I made 7 passenger grav speeders to get the players around at speed or various armored vehicles. My hope is that this soon gets fixed and I can enjoy building family sedans and giant exploration ATV's.

Why pay more well it is currently supported and it is easier to get new players when you can point them to their favorite store and say look there it is.

Being done right now with the two vehicles books, coming out July!

Good it has been a wait. Mega traveller and the new era included it in the rules. This is a way for someone who does not have a game currently to play. i will probably pick up the civilian one since when I do run it is not a military campaign.

Pretty much why we separated them. Civilian Vehicles does not necessarily mean 'no weapons.' That said, there are some sexy vehicles in the military book :)

Thanks for your answers, Matt.

I realise it's apropos for dialogue in this here oft hostile forum, but since queries are getting answers here, there's been a few requests for rules clarifications over on your MG boards that have gone unanswered (or more likely just unnoticed).

Is this actually a better place to ask such questions, given the need for you to pay attention to this forum?

Btw, this is a sincere query, no sarcasm intented at all. :)

By and large, the Rulesmasters area of our forums is the best place - we are running a little behind on our answers there, but will be back up to speed soon!

I've been on the forums for about a year and I never knew about this area. I do not play any of your other games, so my bookmark goes straight to the Traveller section.

Just one voice here, but any chance of considering making the rules section a subsection of the appropriate game? Or maybe cross linked (don't know if that is possible with your forum software). It would be easier, to me, than having to sift through posts about everything you produce.

MongooseMatt, perhaps you should make sure the Rulesmasters area is being monitored before suggesting it. Searching the forum for 'Traveller' produced 10 results and 6 of them have not been responded to. Four of them are over 4 months old with no response.

Combine that with a game system that's average at best and does not offer any benefit compared to cheaper TRAVELLER rules systems (Mega, TNE) and suffers from 1st Edition syndrom as well as some (IMHO massiv) balancing problems in combat, weapons etc. and a TRAVELLER GM gains no benefits from choosing Mgt while loosing many by NOT choosing say TNE/FFS or GURPS. Even if I AM INTERESTED in playing say Babylon5 (I am not(1)) with the rules I still loose due to the over-simplified system.

It annoys me when people make these kind of pronouncements as though they were fact rather than that poster's opinion.

You do not speak for me. I have and use Mongoose Traveller and I feel I gain more than I lose from not using the other versions. So much for generalizations.

Allen

So, you make a generalization whilst condemning other generalizations. Ironic, that.

In any case, I think that most sentient beings can infer that this was an expression of his opinion, not a statement of fact.

Re the argument being about the "best" version of Traveller:
The sooner you get over this the happier you'll be, Ty. There is no "best" version. Of Traveller, of RPG, of art, of story, of song.

No need to lecture me on this point; I play the game I want to play. I was merely correcting an (apparently) intentional attempt to misrepresent the issue. I'm not particularly interested in debating that issue here.

Gotcha. As Emily Litella says, "Never mind." :)

Here's a good reason for MGT. Around where I live, if you ask someone if they want to play CT or MT, they look at you like you just fell out of a time warp from the past. I've gotten comments about how the robots are so advanced that all they can do is say "Danger, Danger Will Robinson."

By contrast, when you put a flyer in your FLGS if they want to play Mongoose Traveller, you get serious responses. Doesn't matter if the setting is identical, if all but a few tweeks are made, etc. Its all about branding. MGT is New Star Trek, CT is Old Star Trek.

EDIT: Also, my company, Jon Brazer Enterprises, produces all new material for Mongoose Traveller that is easily ported over to older version. See my signature for more details.
