Superb suggestions!

While many of the Fanerge Eggs had "nested" surprises in them, adding a "puzzle box" angle to the Globes will only make those objects more fascinating. Especially if solving the puzzle takes a great deal of time.

There's already a somewhat similar "puzzle box" in canon too. Arbellatra placed a seemingly simple box in the Palace's central arboretum during her reign while stated the box would open itself at the proper time. No one has touched it since and the box hasn't opened yet either, so no one knows just what Arbellatra left for the future...

The box was supposed to open on 001 - 1000, but the mechanism failed. The contents are just supposed to be the usual things anyone would place in a time capsule.

I would very much appreciate it if someone would write up an extensive "encyclopedia" article for Kurishdam in Freelance Traveller on these "not-Faberge not-eggs", whatever they are ultimately to be called... This sort of idea is what Freelance Traveller LIVES for...

With the puzzle box - apart from making them items of obsession for noblers (how the f**k do I open this thing? We've been trying for 600 years to open it), I was aiming more for the PC's.

If a noble hide the secret formula to new-new-new-new-coke inside, the PC's are hired for an obscene amount of money by "Snatch n Grab LIC" to retrieve the formula so they can make their Pepsi-max-max-max.

The PC's break in and find out they can't get the forumula without running around trying the find some obscure archaelogist who knows the relevant history of Arglebargle-IX and the reign of Lord R. Of course the archaelogist was last seen heading towards the Sword worlds, while being chased by Vargr and the INI for some reason. Or if the PC's dont jump for the credits, maybe said noble hides the photos he has of the PC's from the "German shepherd and custard incident" inside....o:

Another reason could be the PC's are looking for the "lost vault of infinite gold", but no maps from the time survived. But it seems that the world globe for "Monty Haul world" was constructed when the vault was made, maybe we can ask the nice noble to let us see his....oh wait he want the gold too...okay lets steal it.

On edit: Sigh. Internets playing up sorry. With the grown crystals construction - certain things could be included in the manufacture known only to certain people. That nice globe which decorates the Solomani Secretariat? What a nice gift? Well built into its very structure is a recording device. Now lets see what those Solis are planning. Of course retrieval could be tricky as the thing cant really transmit, but it can be read passivley by a scanning laser or the like. Now who will we hire/press gang to get the data....

Two more suggestions if I may. I'd like to plump for a few "starglobes" in the mix, Globes that reproduce the night sky as seen from certain worlds.

I also think that it would be a nice touch if the Globe representing a certain world contained gemstones native to that world. Granted, diamonds are going to be mostly the same planet to planet, but they will be differences on the isotopic level.

Not very impressive... so that's where the star-field comes in... or it shows the entire asteroid belt in excruciating detail.

I will get to this in a sec...

First, Zuchai crystals are not "required" or "essential" to Jump Drives. They are merely the most efficient and cost effective method. Terra, and possibly Vlad were tooling around Jump Space with out them for a bit.

Now on the esteemed Bat.

In the case of an asteroid field the trick is that is held together with some form of E/M fields, projected, perhaps with some glow, from the central star (in case of binary plus systems).

The trick is once every so often due to some weird orbital mechanic, say when the HomeWorld (Main Inhabited Asteroid) is in complete shadow...the whole belt collapses on the star which goes out.

The user has to physically move the system around, it will move in a viscus manner, like gelatin, that allow the user to basically sculpt the system in the shape it will be after the "eclipse", at which point it turns back and continues running till the next event. If the user does not or can not shape the system, then it stays dormant, or not...

Just my two creds. Loving it so far, but since when does Rob get a Globe and a Propeller Beanie? Some folks have all the luck.
