• Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
  • We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.

Additional CPU programs for CT

Maladominus

SOC-14 1K
OK, focusing strictly on Classic Traveller rules here (Book 2 and High Guard)... if you had to add say 3 or 4 more "programs" for a starship onboard computer, what would they be?

My personal shortlist of programs that would be be found on many adventurer ships:

1) Basic Survey (requires 1 CPU space)
2) Detailed Survey (requires 2 CPU space)
3) Damage Control (requires 1 CPU space)

Basic Survey. The program requires Computer-2 to write, and also an individual with Survey-2 skill (from Book 6 Scouts). Basic Survey allows the bridge to use its sensors and scanners, and any other specialized electronics equipment (e.g. neutrino sensors, mass sensors, etc) to gather planet data and information on planetary bodies.

Detailed Survey. Similar to Basic Survey but results in more comprehensive and detailed planetary data. This program requires Computer-3 to write, and also an individual with Survey-4 skill.

Damage Control. This program allows the engineers to monitor and gather accurate feedback regarding any damage received by the ship (either due to battle or other accidental damage). It allows the engineers to minimize the time spent on diagnosing and initiating necessary repairs. Use of this program will give an additional +1 DM to the Damage Control and repair rolls per Book 2 (page 34). To write this software requires Computer-2 and Engineering-2 skills.

Hmm, I wonder how much these programs should cost? I do know that the damage control software should be universally easy to obtain, and hence should be very cheap. The Survey programs, on the other hand, are more expensive... are probably written by very experienced IISS veterans.

I'll try to think of a few more "must-have" computer programs... but those 3 above are the ones that came to me right away!

OK, I quickly thought of one more specialized CT program

#1) Aslan ships only

Inter-clan Protocol program. This software is a communications package meant to be used by the Communications officer of larger Aslan vessels (especially warships).

Honor, proper courtesy and protocol are EXTREMELY important when Aslans deal with other Aslans (especially outside of their clan!). Being able to quickly recognize and realize the customs, banners, markings, dialects, call-signs and quirks of the numerous Aslan clans is an important part of avoiding conflict.

The Inter-clan Protocol software enables the bridge to maximize the effectiveness of communications and hails between ships. This is an important piece of software when negotiating diplomatically, parleying, or negotiating a surrender. In the past, this software program is credited with facilitating a surrender without adding unnecessary insult to the prestige of the surrendering side.

It also plays a role in helping to avoid unnecessary conflicts or provocations. All Tlaukhu-owned vessels typically have this program included in their standard software package.

Flavor Addendum: a few of the more belligerent (warlike) Aslan clans have refused to install the Inter-clan Protocol program on any of their ships, claiming that true diplomacy comes from within, and that computer programs should have no role in the formalities and communications between 'REAL WARRIORS'. At least, that's the excuse they give.

For more ideas, try this thread. There was another thread with very detailed software and hardware for CT-LBB2, but I can't seem to find it when searching for "software" or "computer" on any forum on CotI.

well it can already be covered with
most LBB you just make things fit
how you want them IYTU...

like surveys can already be done
by "probe" missles and just interpted
by people with SURVEY skills...

OR

the probe missle can be altered by
someone with SURVEY and COMP skills
tu suit your needs...

this assumes that IYTU that things are
standard, a nuke is a standard nuke missle
a conventinal missle is standard
TNT conventinal missle, a probe is a standard
probe package....etc...etc...then tweak
it to your content..

i suppose if you have a character building
a missle and program from scratch you
could come up with those programs...

sorry i'm just a by the CT book
"consititutionalist?"...yeah i devaite
IMTU but not alot....and if i do its
just taking an existing standard and
"stretching" it a bit to fit what i want
rather then writing something totally
brand new......that does have its place
though as this is "fantasy"...and the
whole point of RPG'ing....

i've come up with a few odd programs
now and then...but i myself can generally
get it covered in skills or the current
selection of programs..or a combo of both..

make it what ya want!

Weapon Battery: CPU 2
Allows turrets to be grouped into batteries and controled by a single gunner. This allowed use the of the HG batteries in the LBB ship designs.

Xecutive JumpSuite(tm): CPU 2, Mcr 1 (special rates to ship lenders and subsidy providers)

Welcome to Xecutive JumpSuite(tm), An advanced, combined Generate-Nav-Jump-1 program, streamlining and simplifying the jump process and providing numerous security features for most varieties of mercantile shipping.

Taking up only two slots of CPU, Xecutive JumpSuite(tm) operates identically to the standard Generate, Jump-1 and Navigate programs. JumpSuite features a simple, helpful interface to assist short-staffed merchant craft with the chores of navigation. "I see that you're trying to plot a jump. Can I help?"

At the preference of the installer, Xecutive JumpSuite(tm) may be set to allow the ship's navigator to choose destination from a predetermined menu of destinations, or for convenience, may be set to follow jumps along a scheduled route. The program makes separate Generate programs and individual jump-tapes a thing of the past: indeed, it actively and completely blocks such software from system input. Once installed, Xecutive JumpSuite(tm)cannot be removed from the ship's computer without a complex array of heavily encrypted keys; attempts to defeat the encryption result in a complete computer lock-out, effectively immobilizing the ship. In order to insure the safety of passengers and spacecraft alike, lockout also initiates the repeated transmission of ship's identity, status, legitimate ownership and position to aid in recovery efforts by local authorities.

Xecutive JumpSuite(tm): Secure Your Investment.

For Jump-3 capable ships, ask for:
Xecutive JumpSuite PRO(tm): CPU 4, Mcr 2. Contact your retailer for custom installation.

*Cue dramatic music, fade in to drifting hulk of shattered R-Type*

Voice over: "Every year, untold millions of credits worth of shipping are lost to piracy. And research shows that ultimately, pirates themselves shoulder only half the blame. Why instigate battles to the death, when the loss of a few million credits in fungible cargo would have been all that was suffered? Why risk your investment for the sake of plucky but incompetent crews and their speculative cargos?

There IS a solution.

Auto/Surrender(tm)
Call, and our trained technicians will install Auto/Surrender(tm)directly into your ship's CPU; only YOU hold the key to remove it. Once installed, it only takes up one slot of the computer's CPU. Its operation is deceptively simple. When ship's sensors indicate a powered vessel of equal or greater tonnage and determine it to be on an intercept approach, Auto/Surrender(tm) automatically shuts down and locks the ship's drives, seals the bridge, and unseals the ship's hold, locker, and airlocks, providing no-fuss, no-muss entry to boarders and simultaneously depriving them of the need to damage the spacecraft, and the means to steal it. Auto/Surrender(tm) also responds to most Imperial Navy "Halt" signals, making routine inspections easy and protecting shipowners from impetuous and/or larcenous crew bent on smuggling, to the detriment of company reputation and shareholder value.
