Ok I have to pipe in now. I have, mostly done even, a independent cavalry regiment almost ready to roll. We are pricey, but We are also Expensive!

There's a great lead-in for a team of bounty hunters....

That gives us three so far:

1. Star Legion - Julian Protectorate (Falkayn) http://www.falkayn.com/traveller/jp/starlegion.html
2. 4th Kentari Jaegers - Solomani (eclipse)
3. Harper's Hoplites - Mercenary (Liam Devlin)

Thank you sir, The three bowls is an idea stolen from Glen Cook's "Black Company (1st book)". Times three!

Thanx Garf, means a lot. Hammer's? Nahhh. These are Light Infantry. THAT would be plagiarism!!!
But BG Koniev is a name I've used before in tNE..
FYI those who dinnae know...
General Koniev was the Russian General to actually reach the burbs of Berlin before ZHukov was given the go ahaead by Stalin to finish the job.
Koniev would've been to the bunker & Adolf if he'd been given the green light, IMHO sooner (ww-2). Ain't politics grand in war?

Bring em on Blacklight! WhooHoo! ;)

thought I recognised the name. heh. Didn't know that about him. I only know the name because it's one of the AI levels for the russian player in the Computer version of Axis and Allies.

Zhukov I mostly remember for his comment about the brits rub goldberg devices for removing mines...

"Don't you have Infantry?"

Koniev was less the prima donna and more the traditionalist commander-tactic wise. Zhukov was innovative and brilliant, but he used his infantry to clear minefields for the armor to rollover their blasted bodies. And they probably weren't party-members either!
Zhukov's idea for using Bomber search lights to blind the Germans crossing the Oder was a great idea--it also silhouetted all of his tanks crossing the river for the '88's to whittle down.
Koniev created an artillery hellstorm by contrast and (and rolled over what remained of dazed and deafened German resistance towards the city.
A Ruthless man. Koniev was from Cossack stock, Zhukov was a maverick, but he'd saved Russia's bacon vs the Japanese in manchuria in 38. ANd arrived in time to save Moscow 41.

Interesting. very interesting.
So how does this Chick with Harper's Hoplites compare?

Ex-Impie Marine but... what... enquiring minds want to know.

There was Japanese - Soviet action in '38? I remember couple of half-heart assaults and over enthusiastic sabre rattling that happenned a year or two before Pearl Harbor.

One thing that always amazed me about the Soviets are the complete 180s they did in order to win the Patriotic War (Thier name for WWII).

</font>
  • From a badly trained and equiped military with a purged officer corp to a well trained machine.</font>
  • The Soviets lost virtually all thier industrial base with the German invasion of 1941. What they didn't lose or destroy they moved east into Siberia. Within a year they had new factories producing equipment. The Stalingrad encirclement in 1942 was one of the first benefactors of these new industrial cities.</font>
I may hated the Soviet Union's government and ideology, I have to take my hat off for the Russian people.

BG Vanya Koniev, Harper's Hoplites

ethnically, she hails from the Ukrainian-German settled world of Mueller/Shenk/Old Expanses.(1325)
B554823-B N GG present (High Passage #5-The Gathering"), Avg stellar world, thin atmosphere.

She was mustered out at the end of the Rim war after putting down several insurgencies in the Old Expanses. Unconventional warfare, crowd control, etc were highlights of her career. Counter insurgency stuff. A LTC at 41 she was young for her rank. Her age, and her ruthless reputation earned her friends and foes alike.
She drifted for 2 years and came to the Gateway Sector looking for employment.
The Hoplites were in need of a regimental commander, after the death of their first commander on Renaldo. She was one of three candidates selected by the remaining chain of command.
The Plinth memorial to the betrayal of the CO & rest of the unit killed there, was her idea.
At 44, she is making the best of what they have, technology wise, and genuinely earns the respect of her troops. Officers in the Mercenary Units of the Imperium, lead from the front, REMF officers do not!
She does not tolerate shirkers, or those who try "to get over". She lets her NCO's handle the day to day discipine. They are authorized to keep the personel honed to alertness, and be aware of their surroundings at al times.
The current RSM, Ghaniishin is more into enforcing the rules than she. Sarcasm that does not equate to insubordination is viewed by her as Trooper's humor.
Tactically, she adapts to terrain and situation well, and tries to stay planned two steps ahead of her opposition. She is generous with bonuses and privileges when they are due, iridium hard on unit-thieves, and deserters; and will "go to the wall" with any trooper in good standing.
As long as whatever the men are doing does not prohibit them from being ready for duty, she allows them their sway in the billets. Fighting amongst themselves, i.e. is overlooked by her, as she wants her troops aggressive. Drug use, drinking, if it makes you unfit, is up to the Squad leaders and Platoon sergeants to deal with.
Ghaniishin may not like her style of leadership, nor her methods, but the Hoplites have prospered from a demoralizing blow on Renaldo to their present status in the subsector.

Do they exist in the time frame of the Kursis Charter (Start of rim war?)
------------------------------------------------
That was my understanding. In my unit history section, they were formed as standing troops to replace Imperial units recalled for the war. Harper, having 20 Billions on a size six world (CoTI Star map used for UWP's & planets noted in text)was a prime recruiting ground for Mercs. the world of Harper/GateWay-M subsector, imho, can sit like Sparta, and export troops, of various expertise/ mission types.
Harper has a non charismatic dictatorship currently (1000 era-Kursis charter).

In the first case, an Abwehr (German Intel) inspired plot that Stalin in his paranoia took hook line, and sinker-to the detriment of the Russina Army Officer Corps.
Of twenty-six "Marshals (0-10's), only three survived the purge-Zhukov among them.
In the second case, the Soviets still had industrial plants beyond the Urals never touched by Nazi Bombers (out of range). These produced the T-34 tank, the single best tank of the war (Ruski/Allied side). The German Panther Mk V PZkw
was a direct rip off of it. And a better tank, in many opinions.
In the third case, let us not forget the Russian war machine directly benefitted from the Convoys that braved U-boats and Luftwaffe sea patrols around Norway Arctic seas to Murmansk & Archangelsk harbors.
Without the trucks built by Chevrolet/ Dodge, the summer 1944 offensives would have bogged down for lack of supply vehicles. Not to mention gasoline, bullets, and bombs.
When we remember folks on Nov 11th, do not forget those who risked all by sea,, on either side, Navy, or merchant-marine.

Falkayn-I need you to e-mail me you're hard addy again. I have your LoT copied. Due to a virus (No-TNE joking aside) I was forced to rebuild the comp last month, and lost a ton of e-mail stuff.

sorry to interrupt the thread guys.

Lookin' good! For anyone thinking of posting new work in this genre, could I suggest that we try and standardize the layout? That way, users will always know where to look for the info that they want.

The outline I suggested earlier was:

a. Introduction
b. History of the Service/Force/Unit
c. BASIC Equipment
d. TO&Es (Organization)
e. Intro Doctrine/Tactical Manual?
e. Campaign/Mission/Ticket Suggestions (not like "Linkworlds Cluster", but rather some basic guidelines and plot suggestions for GMs)
e. Famous/infamous characters (possible NPCs)
f. General service NPCs
OK, so checking what I've got on the Star Legion so far, I already have:
a. Introduction
b. History of the Service/Force/Unit
d. TO&Es (Organization) - still rough

And what I really need is:
c. BASIC Equipment
e. Intro Doctrine/Tactical Manual?
e. Campaign/Mission/Ticket Suggestions (not like "Linkworlds Cluster", but rather some basic guidelines and plot suggestions for GMs)
e. Famous/infamous characters (possible NPCs)
f. General service NPCs

Could be a tall order for a 'unit' almost as big as the Imperial armed forces! How about I concentrate on the Legion Marines, specifically the Legions, the general dogsbodies that get the job done.

To repeat the main points about the Marine Legions ...

</font>
  • The Marines mainly consist of the Legions, the ordinary marines, their support vehicles and their heavy weapons.</font>
  • Legions Uniform: Camouflage shipsuit, dress blacks with red beret.</font>
  • The Marines colour is red.</font>
  • All legionaries are recruited from amongst the Protectorate's member states. Because the Star Legion must be seen to be independent they are asked to renounce their state citizenship and become solely Protectorate citizens. This also serves to somewhat protect legionaries during times when they must serve in a state that is currently in conflict with their home state.</font>
More to come soon!
