Best TV SF for Traveller

Well just made sure someone mentioned Cowboy Bebop, phew! They are TL 9 - 11 bounty hunters just making their way through the universe.

Good one, I recently pulled out my Cowboy Bebop Remix I and watched Honky-Tonk Women and Gateway shuffle. Pretty good stuff.

Remix (for those of you who don't know) is a single CD with 5 eps on it.

any yes the music gets you coming and going (beginning and end).

I guess The tv shows that have shaped my traveller universe the most thus far that would be "Red Dwarf "," Space: Above and Beyond."......Oh ,and somtimes " Roughnecks..the Starshiptrooper chronicles"

Rock On!

...Oh ,and somtimes " Roughnecks..the Starshiptrooper chronicles"

That was so much better than the crappy movie (I recently heard there is an even worse second movie *shudders and looks skyward "Sorry, Bob, not much we could do.."*)!

And it get bonus points for having the Skinnies.

Still, not sure TV really influences my games. Franky I could pull any of my Traveller stuff out and it would be new to my peeps.. :( Therefore, not much need to go to other sources.

Lmao!

Worse ?

That part with Doogie Howser Gestapo agent was just chilling ;)

OK, so parts of the first one were good, can't lie the [VR] still use the famous and cool "Do you want to know more?" FedNet gag, and yes, Doogie Howser, SS-SD was kinda wild. And the Bugs rocked! Just most of the movie sucked rocks...

Sorry can't help it, I read and took to my heart the MI of the book. "MI takes care of it's own!" Still living it today (probably am living, thanks to it, as my friends all do too. :D)

Not just Erin. I remember Pamala Hensley, Ana Alicia, and a few other faces that I cannot put names too.

Wilma Deering and Princess Ardela appeared on my TV screen at a very impressionable age. So I spent pre-puberty identifying with a tubby hairy guy in a body stocking... I also had a remote control inflatable Twiki... I tunk you not. ;)

(Buck Rogers - Faithful Robot Companion, 'Radio Controlled Twiki")

As for TV shows that have/might influence my Trav games...:

Firefly
Farscape
I, Claudius
Deadwood
Ulysses 31
Blake's 7
UFO
Buck Rogers
Starhunter
The Professionals
The New Avengers
Battle of the Planets
Captain Scarlet (mmmmm, Destiny Angel...)
Tales of the Golden Monkey
Space 1999
Cowboy Bebop
Doctor Who (both)
The Wire
Planetes
Ghost in the Shell SAC
Macross
B5 (though I still tend to agree with Simon Pegg... ;))
and, of course, Trek.

Just watching Earth 2. Not bad. Not amazing, but no crapness either.

UFO and Space 1999(Gerry Anderson), "Battlescarred and lacks alot"(the old BSG), NOT Star Trek(too damn clean), Captain Blood and all the sunday afternoon cheese movies from the 70's, The Thunderbirds... Now adays add in B5, Modern Battlestar Galactica(sooooo much better), Firefly(Abso-Dam-Lootly!!!)

And most of all, the 6 o'clock news!

What influenced my TRAVELLER?

Everything and anything...

from Star Trek TOS (especially the first season)
Space: 1999
Lost In Space (yes, all 3 seasons)
The Avengers (Mrs. Peel in a bodysuit, worth the price of admission...)
The Prisoner
UFO (who can argue with purple hair and miniskirts?)
Powers of Matthew Star (Lou Gossett Jr. learning to fly an F-4 in flight with a NATOPS manual in hand is priceless!)
Space Rangers (missions on a shoestring...sound familiar?)
Battle Beyond the Stars (classic grade-b space opera)
ROBOTECH (who can argue with giant robots that transform into aircraft?)

(pant...pant...)

TV series influences...

Well, a lot of things listed before--Babylon 5, original Star Trek, Space:1999. the Prisoner, the Starlost. Oh, I did throw in a five foot tall sapient carrot once (drawn from Lost in Space.) Things like that are too good to pass up, in spite of the series.

Stuff I haven't seen listed yet includes Rat Patrol (not SF, but the grit, pluck, and improvisation), the original Mission Impossible, Man from UNCLE, and Tom Corbett Space Cadet, which I lived to watch for a couple of years. Somehow the cheesy sets just added to the magic.

Going with non-SF TV shows. Hmm.

Wild, Wild West. (Dr. Loveless is NPC)
Emergency.
Jonny Quest.
The Prisoner.
Danger Man (aka Secret Agent in the USA)
The Avengers. (while other kids wanted to be James Bond, I wanted to John Steed)
Charlies' Angels.
Tales of the Gold Monkey.
Maverick.
Black Lagoon.

*grins*

My dad named his cat after John Steed, but I am sorta partial to a stick figure with a halo. :p Appeals to the Scoundrel in me. And I mean the B/W one too.

Hi

Hi,

Getting a little away from SF, there is one show that I have been watching lately on TV that has had some interesting bits and pieces in it that I have thought might be of use in Traveller (or other RPG).

Its called "Burn Notice" and its on USA Network, and is about an ex-spy who has more or less been blacklisted and cut-loose by the organization he had worked for. The show centers around him trying to figure out who set him up and why. As he tries to figure out this though, he ends up taking a vairety of small jobs helping out people in trouble, etc kind of along the lines of shows like "The A-Team', "The Incredible Hulk", and "The Fugitive", etc.

At times the show can maybe be a little corny, but the characters are likable, and there are alot of little bits that could either be used as story lines for patrons, or other bits that could be useful as "chrome" etc in an RPG.

Specifically, in an episode I saw recently there was a part where he was supposed to meet someone clandestinely, but got called away on an emergency so he had to leave a message in plain sight that most people would ignore, but that he hoped the intended recipient would immediately recognize as a message to him.

In watching this, I thought to myself whether something like that could be worked into an adventure, where maybe a potential patron doesn't show up, but he left a clue that he hopes the players will understand on where to next meet him, but that hopefully others will ignore, and then see if the players are clever enough to put the pieces together.

Anyway, as I said, when watching the show a couple times the thought crosses my mind on how someone might be able to work some of that into an RPG adventure.

Regards

PF

Funny, I remember it being called The Prisoner. :p

And of course if you have to go with that type of PC, I kinda liked Stingray.

"I will take care of your problem, but someday, I will come to you ask you a favor and whatever it is you have to do it..."

It rocked!
