Incorrect.

In MT life force is Str + Dex + End.

For combat the total life force is converted to a hits rating using the table on page 66.

Example - a character 777777 has life force 21, this gives a hit rating of 3/5 - three hits knocks them out of combat, 5 further hits kills them.

I forgot the +1. For discussion purposes, (Life/3)+1 is a good fit to the table.

Was the hits progression in the table ever explained?

It's not, but it's a pattern. Every 3 life adds 1 hit. Most other hits formulae are 1/3 — 2/3 pattern, and it's close to that. For explanatory purposes, it's enough to fake it.

It helps also to remember that the MT Ref's Gaming Kit included an erratum mentioning that all vehicular hits were supposed to be multiplied by 10, so that a "bypassing armor with high roll" can't take out anything below about 20 Td...

With Life=3, it's 1/1, each 9 further is +1/+2, in the pattern for each +3 life being +1/+0, +0/+1, +0/+1.
Note that Life 1-2 should be 1/0, by using the pattern, but a zero-att is a special case, anyway.

Here is the table best I can manage:

Life Force and hits
Life force…hits value
3+……….……….1/1
6+……….……….2/1
9+……….……….2/2
12+……..……..2/3
15+……………..3/3
18+……………..3/4
21+……………..3/5
24+……………..4/5
27+……………..4/6
30+……………..4/7
33+……………..5/7
36+……………..5/8
39+……………..5/9
42+……………..6/9
45+……………..6/10

It follows the pattern... but simply understanding that it is a pattern is the important bit.

This looks like another poll that got broken at some point - names don't match up to numbers, and what's with that empty option at the bottom?
