Kings of the wild frontier

SOC-12
Recently trying to get back into CT after way too many years, I am looking for a subsector that is wild and wooly and just outside the Imperium. Although not interested in the hunting emphasis in "Safari Ship" I am seriously considering District 268. It is on a Mains, nearly every world can be reached by J1. It is full of mostly low pop low-ish tech, lower Starport class worlds. Having read a bit of the wiki there seem to be plenty of intrigues between the couple of high Pop worlds and the Ag worlds combine, and a crazy cult/religion world. Also it seems to be a hot bed of smugglers and pirates etc. All in all the sort of rough and ready "Han Solo" setting I am looking for. Be interested to read about anyone else's experience in playing here and if you think "SS" holds anything really useful to make it a worthwhile purchase in support of a non-hunting campaign. Thanks!!

Why not just make up your own sub-sector that does what you want it to?

You can then place it as close or far away from the Spinward Marches - or any other part of the Imperium, Solomani Confederation, Julian Protectorate or even MgT's new setting on the other side of the galaxy.

If you want to stay within the Marches then District 268 is a good choice, and there is also the sub-sector next door to consider, the Five Sisters.

The adventure Safari Ship is likely to be of some use to you if you want to use a safari ship in your adventuring, as a good chunk of the book is taken up with a very detailed description of a safari ship complete with deckplans. It also contains a detailed description of a single world in District 268 (567-908) and a minor alien race that inhabits that world.

It doesn't provide a lot of other information on District 268, beyond a map and data you could get on the web.

You might also want to look at two subsectors adjacent to District 268 that are mentioned in Adventure 4: Leviathan. They are the Egryn subsector, largely unexplored, and the Pax Rulin subsector.

District 268 is my favorite....

for bad guys you have ex-Sword Worlder Mercs, Trexalon Trade Consortium, and even Zhodani possible. For added flavor there are Darians and Belters, plus a few native races (both intelligent). The Ag World Combine can be trivial or nefarious (how I play them, sort of like the Guilders in Dune). For good guys you have Collace and plenty of "nearby but far away enough" Imperial bases. It is mostly out of the Imperium, and as previously mentioned the rimward possibilities are incredible.
