New Career - Factor

I don't know, after reading through this thread, I've gotten used to idea of 'Factor' and will probably get crochety and grognardy if it's changed. Syndic's good, but I think Factor has more gravitas.

One possible justification for the title could be that it's intentionally misleading, as it sounds a good deal more harmless than 'Agent'.

On the subject of mustering out benefits, a ship is always a good thing. A yacht, maybe? Or something new?

EDIT: oh, and <copy> and <paste> :D

I think that's actually why the name of the career is hanging me up - factor and Traveller already have a set association in my mind, and while I like the career concept presented by Sigg Oddra, it encroaches on my own entrenched grognardy sensibilities.

However, that said, none of the alternatives grab me either. :(

I would put something else on the Mustering Out table. If these "factors" are serving as agents of larger powers (which I will call "Patrons", whether they are nobles or megacorps or local star system governments) they would have some proof of their status. Perhaps the result for a roll of "7" on the Material Benefits table should be,

"Patron's Letter"

This would be like an "Imperial Warrant" but on a lesser scale; the Letter would signify that the PC (and it would have the PC's name on it) has the full confidence of the Patron and is empowered to make agreements that would be binding on that Patron. Such a Letter wouldn't give the same command authority as an Imperial Warrant but it would make a nice adventure hook.
Nice idea Oz.

If I were running a factor in an "active service" type game then such a letter would be standard issue to each commissioned factor.

Since mustering out represents leaving previous employment I'd be reluctant to grant such a letter to a PC - unless the plot demands it ;)

Also I didn't want to use anything not in the three original LBBs.

Hmm, patron's letter = letter of marque ;)

Going back to these two questions:

should a Factor be able to get Leader skill,
and should he get a ship as a mustering out benefit?
If so what should be cut from the benefits table (choice of ship or Travellers' perhaps?) and what would be a good choice of ship?

And one more question, should I use the skill list from Supplement 4 Citizens of the Imperium?
If so, which skills would fit the concept?

Yes - Liaison.

As far as Leader...hmmm...I would say no. However, if you do include it, I would offer it on the Advanced (Edu 8+) Skill table.

Hmm, I notice that in CotI Bureaucrats, Rogues, and even scientists can get leader.

Liaison for sure, but what about interrogation, carousing, recruiting even?

Liason for sure, carousing and recruiting as well. Leader, too. I don't know about interrogation.

I don't think a ship should be part of the benefit, after all, a factor is a person who usually stays in one place and becomes really familiar with it.

Perhaps TAS membership, if you don't like the idea of the "Patron's Letter?"

I've put Patron's Letter in the benefits table as a referee's choice.
Same for ship or TAS membership, so that the referee can decide what suits his game best.

It's odd, but the bureaucrat and the diplomat get interrogation...
