Ever do something online and they ask you for your occupation? Then they give you a drop down list to select from. If you don't find yours you can always chose "Other". Now you get a fill in box.

I have decided to have some fun with these. I work 3 jobs. The main one is as the warehouse worker in a pawn shop. I get anything that is not assigned to the other employees including cleaning the rest rooms. I also close a Subway resturant (was a manager for them for 6+ years) Saturday night. This also requires me to clean the restroom. Lastly, I am the janitor at my church where I also must clean the restrooms. Guess what I have been filling in as my occupation?

I know I filled something odd in once but can't recall what it was. I was in a goofy mood and picked something out of thin air since the stupid form wouldn't allow a simple "other" in the blank.

My job description

The last line of my job description is always 'Other duties as specified.' To get this back on topic, a manager decided to give me building maintenance once, so I was responsible for fixing toilets. Add a crescent and a hammer to your computer toolbox and you can fix anything, or at least get it to a point where you can hire a professional.

I called myself a "Househusband". Did it for 3 years while finishing college and my Master's Degree. I could not find a summer job that paid enough to keep 2 kids in daycare.

Pantology is systematic organization or characterization of the sum total of human knowledge. Someone who approaches the task of such organization with an eye toward combining similar branches into one could be said to be a syncretist, and therefore a syncretic pantologist.

So now you know. The thing is, that if you claim to be one and give an understandable answer you'll be caught out as a poser. Much better to give a long rambling answer which is basically circular logic. :rofl:

One of the things I've always loved about Vance's work is his amazing use of the language and the effect it has on my vocabulary. Thanks to him I can now comment on cornices and finials when I see them and sound like I know what I'm talking about.

In my own case, my actual job titles have been enough to spawn confusion among those outside my field. My own mother can't even tell people what it is I do for a living. "Something to do with rockets" is the most coherant version I've heard. So I usually just put aerospace engineer or instrumentation engineer or controls engineer or something of that sort. That's still my occupation, even if nobody happens to be paying me to do it at any particular time.

Yeah, I knew that (I read Vance with a dictionary, a thesaurus, and a Really Old Dictionary handy), but I've never been able to put it so succinctly. My own answers tend to the pedantic and specious.

I was, of all things, a picture framer for a little over a year. Gave me an appreciation for fine art (Monet is my favorite), but 'picture framer' sounds so pedestrian, so I once put 'artistic technical suport' on an application. I didn't get the job anyway, so I don't know if that was a factor or not...
