Lots of board gaming in my neck of the woods... Trying to get some people into RPGing, but all they've heard of is D&D. I try to convert BGer's by initially making my RPG's like BG's with pieces to move on a grid.
I guess for Traveller I'll have to start with space combat ;)

Online Traveller player as all my RPGing is online these days...
The big, IMHO, benefit of T20 is the ability to introduce some of these D&D people without losing the feel of Traveller and without having to explain all the rules to them.
</font>[/QUOTE]I agree totally. This is a great way to break into the D&D crowd.

Problem with starting wiht space combat is that most other Space Combat games, fighters are significant, in Traveller they are hardly worth the time in real naval combat.
True.

Thats always seemed kinda wrong to me. seems like a swarm of fighters should wreck a larger ship with no fighter screen of its own. in modern naval warfare a single fighter launched missle can sink a ship of the line. maybe someone needs to write some better rules for fighter combat in CT/T20

It's not the fighters that is the problem, it is the lack of an effective weapon system for the fighter to carry.
In CT a missile, especially one designed using the Missiles Special Supplement, could wreck a ship. A fighter squadron that gets in close and puts a few of those into the target is a force to be reckoned with. High Guard reduced the effectiveness of missiles drastically, which T20 copied across.

I have some house rules for missiles in T20 that makes them a bit more like the CT version...

The real problem with fighters in space combat is a tendency towards false WWII analogies. Remember, 'fighters' are using the same type of drive as everyone else, there's no fundamental difference in type like there is between aircraft and surface ships. A small craft combatant is equivalent to a torpedo boat, cutter, or skiff in naval warfare, not to a fighter or bomber.

The common comparison with Traveller is the Age of Sail, where everyone is pretty near the same speed. You could even compare High Guard to the age of galleys in the Mediterranean, where a good hit by the spinal mount weapon (the ram for a galley) would usually at least mission-kill the opposing ship.

My answer to the poll is "...I like doing things with the rules...". I would enjoy playing, but I would have to be the ref and find some players. I know of no active Traveller games in my area.

noone near me to play..........so I tinker sometimes..very heretical ......non-OTU stuff
hmmmmmmm
CT was before Imperium history, so ultimate canon is make up whatever you like, eh? Make up everything as ya go.

funny how so many ppl voted that they ref, yet noone voted that the play

I picture a table surrounded by ref's with no players

If it will make people feel better next sunday at the game i will give out this addy and ask that my players post. there are people playing traveller...they just dont post as much as the refs i guess.

(With an armor rating of 10+ though the fighters again become impractical and the number of fighters required to damage a capital ship go to the very silly range of things.)

Fighters are best used in the commerce end of things. (Regardless of ruleset.) Against merchantmen and the typical corsairs that prey on them.

Hmmmm.....

(Resurrection!)

Actually, I'm playing with the rules in a Solo Game - don't have the time to recruit for a FtF, and don't want to drag down a PBEM/Online game - maybe this summer I'll have time to adventure "socially" :smirk:

drag down? What is meant by this?

To add to the resurrected thread, I'm running Traveller again ... this time using Mongoose's rules (MGT). I'm still not 100% convinced by the rules, but they're playing nicely so far. I'm using Fantasy Grounds II and have character sheets designed for both T20 (a bit out of date now) and MGT.

I was *this* close to starting a game, when my wife said to me, "I want to run something! Based on the tv show Heroes!"
Who was I to refuse? And hey, this gives me spare time to paint more miniatures!

Don't Drag Me Down, Bro!

drag down? What is meant by this?

By not being "available" for prompt replies and participation with the game (I don't want people's fun to be wrecked because I got busy and couldn't answer/post on a "regular" cycle).. Respect Thy Fellow Gamer - Time Is Valuable (and not just mine...):D

Understood, but I think something can be worked out as long as the other parties are aware of the situation. How about a Solo PbP where the only other person is the GM and posting is done on your schedule?

With no other players, there would be less posts to keep up with and it would take little time to read the last GM post and create your own post.

If others are allowed to join, they can be told before the adventure starts that you are the main character, they are supporting cast, and posts are limited.

Options if others are allowed to join:
- There would be a limit of one post after each GM post in the InCharacter thread and the GM does not post responses to other players until the star of the show has posted.
- One post after each GM post in the InCharacter thread and the GM does not post responses to other players until ALL players have posted once (or until some prespecified time goes by in case someone drops completely off the grid)
- The GM posts on his specified schedule (work out how often with you - once a week?) players can post when it is convenient for them but only once between each GM post.
- You are not the main character but instead are supporting cast. If you don't get a post in, the GM posts for your character along with his post. GM runs character based on information you have provided such as the characters goals, personality, background and motivations.

The only problem I've been running in to is too much snow on game days. We only do T20 once a month and its snowed the last 2 out of 3 times 8" or more. The closes person is 35 miles away that makes for a long drive!

I'm running my first game of it (MGT) in the middle of March. I did character generation with two players and they had a blast - we ended up doing only that for the entire time (and we generated their homeworlds as well, on the spot). Fun stuff.

Then, because of this, they recruited more people (and I recruited one more) and it turns out we'll have 6 players plus the GM (me!). So, at the next session we'll run through character generation again, then hopefully we'll start the first actual gaming session.
