[Proto-Traveller] How much map do you really need?

binky

SOC-12
Been spending a chunk of time of the holidays going back over the inaugural PT thread and got to thinking of how much starmap you really needed to get started.

To recap, here's Aramis' proposed sector layoutt:

code:

+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+
[/QUOTE]How much else of this really needs to be fleshed out before you can calcualte the impact on say, the Marches, and then have a basis fom which to build a campaign? My gut feeling is actually, not very much at all.

Having some idea what's to the left of the Marches might be useful, but is probably not essential, it can just be the frontier.

Personally I'm looking to base charaters in District 268 and then have them travel up and through the Marches as time progresses.

I'd be interested in how other people woyld/are approaching this.

- Neil.

I've accepte the need for an additional collumn, not an additional row. The SR need not be terribly far away.

As I have said previously, there's one change I would suggest for Aramis's sector map of the proto Imperium - I think a "corridor" sector should still exist between the core worlds and the Spinward Marches.

This would allow the Spinward Marches to be a true frontier. I'd have lots of jump 2-3 gaps between the worlds in Corridor so that Imperial expansion into the Marches took a while. And it's a bit of a buffer with the Vargr.

So it would look a bit like this:

Which is why I added a column and not a row. Knowing Vargr, they'd have taken anything not Imperial or Zhodani (who I think should have a few more sectors, but since we're focusing on the Imperial), so that means the other ones above Core too. Capital should have at least one sector's worth of buffer from any border at all, on every side.

The Marches, the Soloman Rim have both been taken from the MT maps. Note that this revises the above to match up some of the Imperial map.

It reduces the imperium to 75 ss; less than half.
The Solomani are 33 ss. from 78.

I might even trim Sigg's map some, due to not using the trailing sectors, and stick Reaver's Deep under the Solomani Rim... or not.
