[Proto-Traveller] How much map do you really need?

I still like mine best, but Daryen's seems most reasonable.

OT: Hmm, Plop's spelling has improved, he must be feeling better.

I like it this way.

I'm feeling a little better, and some of my friends and working friends think I'm doing great, but there are still problems there. Just take it one step at a time.

I like the layout. I think the Solomani Confederation and the Hivers may be a bit big, but I like it - a much more manageable "charted space".

The hivers can afford to be big in this setting; they're not in direct confrontation with the imperium, and the Confed provides a big enough buffer.

I've been reading about the Proto-Traveller universe for some time, and I must admit that I am intrigued by the idea of re-envisioning the OTU into a smaller universe that fits the older library data (pre-AotI, or pre-1984).

However, this particular discussion seems to have gone further than that, and is now rewriting the OTU to fit into a smaller mold. While I think this violates the basic premise of the PT Universe, I like the concept of creating an OTU-inspired campaign on a smaller scale.

Of course, the scale I'm immediately drawn to is even smaller than the ones proposed so far. I'd like to see an ATU modelled within a single domain-sized region of space (two sectors wide by two sectors tall). Towards that end, I'd end up losing both the SM and the SR, and come up with a smaller polity for the 3I in a manner similar to what follows below:

(empty) = Non-aligned</pre>[/QUOTE]This gives two different areas where exploration and expansion off the map can occur for Imperials, but presents the major OTU polities in their respective positions, yet with the ability to reasonably travel between them and thus experience them all within a single campaign as a matter of course.

At any rate, it's just a thought intended to spark conversation. What do you think of a domain-sized PT?

I think I like the concept of a big (not quite so big as the 3I, but not small) Hive Federation. That should be included in most versions of the PT map.

Not so hot for a domain-sized map, though.

Well, if you are going to just start from scratch, I want the Imperium to be along one edge, not in the center.

The reason for this is to give the game a full "hard edge" where no defined race (human or alien) is said to live.

A "referee preserve" sector is pointless. It is still trapped within a larger setting which severely restricts the options available to it. Instead the "referee preserve" needs to be a hard edge to the map beyond which nothing is defined. Putting the Imperium on the edge of the map facilitates this type of preserve.

Another reason for the Vlilani to be "Above" the line of the marches... we get access to the hard line.

I know it is late in the discussion but I really want to butt in.
Whatever happens there needs to be more SPACE between empires. It ought to be a contested frontier. A “wild space” sparsely settled that is up for grabs. What I have learned form our discussions is that a well settled planet will be so costly to take that it night not be worth taking.
Once you have it what are you going to do with a planet populated with hundreds of millions or even billions of hostile aliens?

My point is that between the respective empires there should be just enough empty space (unsettled) to make it worth fighting over. Downsize the empires and keep the same map if you want. Just depopulate everything around the “core” areas and make it more of a scramble for good real estate.

Since we like to play on the edge of settled space why bother filling up the map with areas that we are not going to use?
