Proto-Traveller

Hmmm, I wonder what's at that midway point of sufficient mass that would make them both stop there for a big ol' scrap-fest, hmmm?

Hmmmmmmm....
At work (away from Trav books) and only a hazy memory but was there not a Zhodani re-fuelling point there. Perhaps I'm mistaken but I do recall the Zhos being there as a jumping off point for an attack. I'll see if I can find more out when I get home tonight. </font>[/QUOTE]Sounds like a potential calibration point to me...

I've got nothing to add at this point, but I did want to offer words of encouragement. This PT Imperium looks very attractive. And, assuming no changes to the SM, I think my campaign will be fully compatible with it.

(Although, I've been allowing the J1 yacht with fuel for two jumps to do deep space jumps.)

Would anyone mind if I did a LBB2 version of the Azhanti High Lightning?
With a slight change of scale (1 square=1m^3) the deck plans could then still be used for proto-Traveller.
It could either be 3000t, with jump 4, or with a slight rules fudge 2500t with jump 5.
The 3000t jump 4 version retains more of the features of the original...

You kidding? I'd love to see that.

Is there a way of naming it so that we'll know it's not the original by its name? Azhanti High Lightning/SI (for "small imperium")??

"PT Lightning"? Especially since it's a reduced scale vehicle?

Depending on the reduced scale and which sounds better to you, either chibi (link) or SD (Super Deformed) (link) might work, as well as the honorific -chan (link).

So you might have something like:

Chibi Azhanti High Lightning

SD Azhanti High Lightning
Azhanti High Lightning/SD

Azhanti High Lightning-chan
AHL-chan
Azhili-chan
Azii-chan (Vilani shortened form *AND* diminutive!
)

etc.

(having a waking nightmare about a SD Traveller show)

How About Azhanti Low Lightning?

And yes, casey, that is the JG data for titanstorm... Cool...

I've been doing some math (QUick, run for the hills!) with strict Bk 2...

(All three letter codes are JMP)
The smallest J2 design is, of course, the 100Td AAA TL9+
Smallest J3 is 200Td CCC TL9
Smallest J4 is 200Td DAD TL9
Smallest J5 is 400Td KFK TL11
Smallest J6 is 800 Td XDX TL15
Smallest useful J6 is 1000Td

Largest ship by TL
9: 800
A:1000
B:2000
C:2000
D:3000
E:3000
F:5000

Fine for the AHL (I'm liking it personally*) but it wouldn't consistently work.

I think the Gateway sector there uses the DGP info, no idea how that differs from the JG material.

Good numbers there. And any excuse to play Iron Maiden is worth it.

* ALL, Azlili, Ali-chan, etc.

Minor nit pick - the smallest jump 4 vessel going by strict LBB2 rules is TL10. You need a model 4 computer, which doesn't appear until then.

OK, I'm all for throwing in Corridor, Just Because Sigg Says So(tm).

But now I'm back to the drawing board with Core. Really, send me your dot masks. I'll post an example. They're easy to make -- you simply create a 32x40 grid of all periods, then turn the Rift area into spaces. That creates a mask I can run a sector through, and voila! Out comes a Rifted sector.

Now that I have Corridor, I'm considering making Vland be the Core Sector, which means Vland The World could be 'Capital' in PT. I could even move Vland to the 'right' hex number.

The interesting & fun part now is how to jockey the Rift(s) so that Capital is in the crux. OK, is that enough info to get y'all's brains in gear?

Been thinking... this may be too variant but, here goes anyway:

I was thinking that we should define a baseline for rank of the Noble overseers...

Code:
      Pop
SP Hi Mod Low No
A E D D C
B D C C B
C D C C B
D C C B *
E C B * *
X * * * *
Letters: Soc of noble.
* included in the highest neighboring noble's fief.
increase by one if Navy base, reduce by one if TL 7-, B reduces to *
Of course, how much does the noble do is the question... one I answered back then by "Holding the starport as fief"...

from Bil Cameron...
Dan Roseberry and I goofed around with the idea of a 'bisected' or 'rift' Imperium a couple of years back after discussing the old ADV:2 Library data entry. Dan sent me a scan of a hand drawn map and I countered with a MSPaint bitmap. Both are on a virus damaged hard drive that I don't know if I can ever repair.
Dan Roseberry?! Who is that guy? Sounds like a bozo personility to me. Has to be bozo to hang out with reprobaites from Grote. ;)

I've been lurking through this thread for a little bit. Very Interesting.

On the subject of sectors:

Anyone look at the maps for the Dark Nebula game?
If you lay them down in numerical sequence, you will see that the Aslan are actually Trailing the Solomani instead of Spinward.

So I would propose something like this:

Code:
ZDT GVU ??? Big-Rft ??? ???

??? SPM COR Ol-Ex Gt-W 2KW

??? ORV SOL ASL(DN) lil-Rft Hv F

??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

I don't have any of the JG sectors, so I'm appropriating a Old Expanses and the Gateway sectors. Gateway would be as is, but Old Expanses would be completely redone.

A Big Rift would go through Core and ORV, seperating ORV from SOL. A Little Rift would exist seperating the Aslan in Dark Nebula from the Hive Federation. Gateway would be next to Two Thousand Worlds.

On the Book 2 only thing:

I would not want to totally abandon Book 5, but I do recall a while back a interesting posting by Ian Ferguson on the TML called "Small Navies" that , in a nutshell, advocated smaller navy budgets, like Cr1 per person on the navy taxes. I thought that was pretty cool.

I've also thought about changing the budget from what they had in Striker where the Imperium gets 30% of the mil budget and the colonials get the rest. Lets bring back the EMPIRE. Have 2/3 of the navy budget go to the Imperial Navy and let the colonials only have 1/3. And then do this with that small navy budget thing.

I toyed with this a couple of weeks ago. The Imperial Navy in Regina Subsector would have something like 5 big ships, a Strike Carrier (which would be the flagship, ala Farscaps Command Carriers), an AHL, and 3 Gionettie CL's. And of course the 4 Kinunirs. None of the Colonials would have anything bigger than 5k, and none of the Colonials would have Spinal Mount Weapons. Most would be running around with 2-3 bk2 patrol cruisers and maybe a 800dt Broadsword. Thats it.

Proto-Traveller. Small is Beautiful, babe.
So many positive waves here. I love it.

Me, too. Cr1 per person per year. I like it. It's far easier than my ideas on how the imperium was funded...

I think I'll allow somewhat more spending for low-pop worlds... at least enough to fund maintaining either a type T or an SDB.

On the ORV - in Leviathan it states that Sir Ashley Gildemar founded Ashley's Rock after fleeing defeat in the Solomani Rim War - which makes a near to SR ORV more coherent than the great rift idea.

{Snarky mode}
You mean you need more than Bk 2 provides?
{/snarky mode}

The same way that apparently all the Bk2 ones were, by approximation...

Ok, back to the front...
Proto-Traveller is... (snippaged)

Am I missing anything?
Just remembered. Proto-Traveller should/would have to use the Robots from JTAS instead of Book 8. Unless you folks have some different notions out there about bots.
