Question about CT and MT

I was running DDT cassette tapes as a backup device on the network at work during 1996-1997. We had a reel-to-reel tape reader, but did not use it. (Working for the national archives. We also had an 8" floppy drive.)

Nope, cassettes are mentioned, but tapes aren't ;)
Nitpicky, nitpicky... ;)

Doesn't Book 2 refer to jump tapes on self-erasing cassettes? I don't have my reprints handy...

And the very useful JTAS malfunctions article mentions tapes? I'd forgotten that reference.

As long as were making nomimations for CT artists, I'll fire one in from left field. I've always found Donna Barr's work in the Traveller Adventure really charming. It brought a lighter tone and reminded me of the silly fun that inevitablly pops up during a mercant campaign.

Yeah. Good light heartedness.

Correction; Dietrich is my artist of choice who did the ST box cover. I ask forgiveness :eek:

Interesting. I remember the Challenge and TAS Journals with all their meaty additions to CT and MT. I liked the "Earth" issue probably the best... that and that one issue that had that "body hits location" chart for some real advanced combat.
...
I just use the Traveller 2300 Excuuuuuse me 2300AD chart ---
D10
1 = head
2 = chest
4 = abdomen
3 = reroll. if odd then chest, else abdomen
5 = r. thigh
6 = l. thigh
7 = r. leg
8 = l. leg
9 = r. arm
10 = l. arm

I also re-worked how much damage each area could take computed off the 3 physical stats, but that is MTU.

Andy, you could make this change:
3=shoulder, reroll, odd right, even left
The shoulder hit still impacts the torso but does not entail serious damage like in the chest (heart, lungs, spine, etc.) or abdomen (liver, kidney, spine, etc.) but would probably disable that arm associated with it.
Just a lonely little thought I had.

Since the mathematical and tabular data isn't covered by Copyright...

The DGP table was pretty close to this:
2,12 hands (L/R)
3,11 feet (L/R)
4,10 Arms (L/R)
5,9 legs(L/R)
6 Abdomen
7 Upper torso
8 head - 1d on subtable

1 Eye
2 nose
3 mouth
4 ears
5 Brain (apply damage to Int/Edu?)
6 skull.

Dear Folks -

And all humano-centric.

As an alternative, here's my TNE table:

code:

Personal Hit Location
Die
Roll Biped Droyne Multiped
1 Head Head Head
2 Right arm Right arm Forequarter
3 Left arm Left arm Forequarter
4 Chest Right wing Forequarter
5 Abdomen Left wing Chest
6 Abdomen Chest Chest
7 Right leg Chest Abdomen
8 Right leg Abdomen Hindquarter
9 Left leg Right leg Hindquarter
10 Left leg Left leg Hindquarter

Biped: Table assumes front/rear shot.
Side shot: Far side hit equates to a near side hit.

Prone Biped: Table assumes top shot.
Side shot: Far side hit equates to a near side hit.
Front shot: Leg/abdomen hit equals miss.
Rear shot: Head/arm/chest hit equals miss.

Droyne: Table assumes front shot.
Rear shot: Arm hits are hits to the equivalent wing.

Multiped: Table assumes side shot.
Front shot: Hindquarters/abdomen hit equals miss.
Rear shot: Head/forequarters hit equals miss.
[/QUOTE]FWIW, the Striker (version 1) hit location table suffers from the same sort of "ethno-centricity" - it's set up to deal with attacking a tank, which is why rear hits attack the engine, but front hits do not. (Hint: when firing at automobiles, reverse the Striker tables or you'll never disable a car's engine...)

Yep, and it doesn't mention "tape" as the medium, it just says cassettes.

So had I, until someone else quoted it a few months ago.
It's an interesting little article...

If memory serves - the cover for Starter Traveller was David Dietrick (sp?).

For me the defining peice of artwork is in the starter set - its a black and white peice of a young woman in a smock with a holster and head scarf - it just seemed so appropriate and still amazes me when I look at it ( well, except for the weird moon-shot background )

And of course the Keith ship artwork is extremely atmospheric.

As far as MT was concerned - Some of the artwork I thought was among the finest ever produced for traveller - the Blair Reynolds work from DGP products ( Flaming Eye, V & V, S & A, and the Digests, MTJs ) I found particularly striking . I think though that the actual covers for the majority of the MT books themselves were poor - notable exceptions - Hard Times, Referee's Companion, - the majority were ... unfortunate .

As far as the systems were concerned I loved ( and still love ) the MT system - there really is a lot to like in the three core books. The sole exception ( which everyone else seems to be in agreement with ) is the Ship Design system which has continued to irritate me for almost 20 years. In my current campaign I use High Guard for ship designs and just assume the two systems are interchangable.

Maybe the other major regret with MT was the steadfast refusal by GDW to actually move the campaign forward - this failure has been discussed elsewhere on these forums - but I think that this truly was a missed opportunity - it would have been fascinating to see a managed ongoing macro game with supporting product releases.
