Signal Gk - the Fanzine re-issue

Signal GK issue #13 is now parked on the scottmartin.ca website. Direct link (22 MB) is:
http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/SGK_issue_13.pdf

If you want to see all of the signal GK stuff currently hosted at scottmartin.ca, try looking here:
http://scottmartin.ca/Space_RPG/Other_peoples_stuff/Signal_GK/Signal_GK_Info.html

There are some other goodies, which you can get to from the main page - look for "Other Peoples Stuff" for extras from Major B. and some Traveller Logos (CT era) from Bryan Gibson.

Scott Martin

Scott, Jae, and all the other folks involved with Signal GK,

My thanks are not enough for all the work you've tackled, all the materials you've created, and all the effort you've made, but my thanks are all I have.

Thank you all so very much for first creating, sharing, rescuing, and again sharing Signal GK with the Hobby.

Regards,
Bill

Issue 12 is now available with Library Data and extras...

If people like what they see, let me know and I'm hoping my two helpers may consider doing some more issues soon.

Jae

I will gladly help with this task as Signal GK is one of the best Fanzine's I've ever seen. My gut feeling is that more people will see the pdf version that ever saw the original printed version. I personally am looking forward to seeing the rest of the issues. (especially now that my ISP is allowing me to come to their office and use the high speed connection for downloads)

Personally, I'd like to see all of the Traveller Fanzines posted on the web as pdf's, including Imperial Lines and Coreward.

Downloads

Richard,

thanks for getting issue 12 ready - Scott, issue 12 and three add-ons is now online if you'd like to copy and host as well. Are you in contact with Leighton BTW?

Whipsnade, not to be insulting to Scott who has done a sterling job of hosting Leighton's recopies but praise for the magazine really needs to be to all the many contributors I've listed on my download page who helped write and illustrate the 13 issues; in particular Duncan and the other DDT (Dagudashaag Development team) members who month after month struggled to completely detail the Sector.

I'll look out the next (previous) two issues and copy next week if Ewan and Richard are happy to continue.

I won't take any credit for the Signal GK work - all I've done is provide a parking spot for it so that folks can get copies. I pay the same for hosting whether I hit my file quota max or not.

I'd have to admit that I haven't read the entirety of the materials that are on my site, but there are a number of bits in the "other peoples stuff" folder that are quite useful if you're running a campaign.

Jae - I have been in contact with Leighton, but not recently.

Who should be (legally) contacted to ensure that it's OK for me to host these? I have email permission from Leighton for the first 4 issues and I'm currently (naively?) assuming that the fact that these are "wild" on the web suggests that the owners (Jae?) are OK with me hosting them.

If you'd like me to park more issues, drop me a PM with an email address, and I'll be a bit more responsive, I generally only check PM's here a couple of times a month. I've been a bit distracted with the "making a living" and "having kids" recreational activities of late.

Needless to say, I don't have a problem with folks "deep linking" to my site, one of the main reasons that it is set up the way that it is...

Hosting

Scott,
Technically and legally I remain the overall editor, producer and owner of all issues of the fanzine though the individual contributions are copyright the individual contributors. I am and remain extremely grateful to you for your willingness to host and support all the Fanzine material once its copied. If you send me your email address I'll contact you directly as soon as each issue is ready and the more places that get the 'signal out there' the better. You've been a real star and I am personally extremely grateful for your assistance.

Leighton asked and got permission to release the OCR'd versions provided they were not altered without my prior permission.

You have to excuse my paranoia but as I explained in another posting on travellerrpg, Duncan and I both found a number of people over the years claiming authorship and ownership of several of our earlier articles (in my case, particularly my material from Signal 1-3) and copies can still be found all over the 'net which fail to acknowledge who created the material or where it came from... I remember as I was putting Issue 13 together I even got an email from some idiot trying to 'sell' me my own tracers adventure... Its one of the reasons I was initially hesitant to agree to releasing PDF's but realised it wasn't fair to all the contributors who created such fantastic material and deserve for their work to be known.

Jae,

Hence my address to "Scott, Jae, and all the other folks involved with Signal GK" for "for all the work you've tackled, all the materials you've created, and all the effort you've made, in creating, sharing, rescuing, and again sharing Signal GK with the Hobby."

You'll see that my thanks to the original authors and artists are right up there with my thanks to those rescuing the magazine from limbo.

<SNIP>

<EDIT>I assume that you have read the cover for the signal GK overview page: if not, I'd appreciate it if you could give it a read and provide some text discussing the other issues. I don't know the history, and a large part of the "history of Traveller" is locked up inside peoples heads, because "everyone knows that".

Because of that assumption things like the Sunbane archives vanish and aren't replaceable... and everyone forgets the people who made this "universe" a vibrant place, because it wasn't just Marc and the Keith brothers</EDIT>

Fair enough - the amount of traffic that hits scottmartin.ca is fairly low (it's my "toy" website) so hosting this stuff isn't a big deal. The HIWG CD was there for a while (until IP issues were aired and I was asked to pull it) so compared to that signal GK with 13 issues at 20 MB a piece is still pretty "lightweight"

I suspect that your sector data will not add significantly to the "load" if it needs a home - I have responded to your PM, so feel free to send me an email to discuss.

I'm not sure if you want to mention Signal GK in "other version" forums - The content is not exclusively MT, and most of it is usable in other traveller rulesets. The folks who frequent the ruleset specific boards don't always realize that there are gems in the "heretic" boards as well ;)

Clarification

Whipsnade,
Thank you for your clarification - suddenly I find myself aligning my personal views more and more with Clay's decision re his work and efforts.

I think I will put out another two issues and then hold off any further re-issues for a while, though of course all the other contributors are welcome to re-release their efforts in the meanwhile.

Ewan, Issue 11 will be sent out to you sometime today - given its size (it's also one of my favourite issues) I'd suggest a standard scan might be best (or do as separate PDF's - there are two sets of library data and an 'extra') - Theo, I'll post out ten sometime next week if that's ok?

Scott, revisited your holding page - Personally I think you and Leighton have done a fantastic job hosting all of the traveller material including Signal... Again thank you.

The history behind Signal is torturous - not sure if you want that remembered... It would be nice to have all the contributors named though... in particular the many unsung heroes behind the DDT (yes we named ourselves that deliberately) who worked so hard and for so long detailing the sector. My only comment on your holding page is that I personally was never directly involved with HIWG (see below for an explanation) beyond that it's reasonably factual - the hidden background is listed below. BITs and Andy were major factors in the final two issues seeing the light of day.

Duncan was the genius behind it all even though I'm sure he probably felt I hijacked his 'baby'. Duncan put together this wonderful and HIWG-official background to Dag' and due to a misunderstanding I thought he'd asked me to take over Dag' and so issue 1 came out (hell, in my real job I've created local currencies, bio-diesel carshare schemes, fundraising libraries and community printshops and recycling schemes amongst others - this was my attempt at a relaxing hobby). I personally think Duncan was horrified at so-much unauthorised material but he ran with us even though I think he'd have preferred to have limited our excesses more (we populated the Sector with too many aliens amongst others and made Dag' even more of a bolshy rebel at the Imperium's heart than even he'd envisioned). Despite that he supported us, encouraged us and acted as (a perhaps slightly distorted) inspiration to our efforts - hence the dedication on my holding page. It was a lot of work (over 250 copies x 40+ pages sent out each issue) and I tried to share the load without a lot of success. Although I tried guest editors and midway through Leighton became the named editor, due to personal problems he was experiencing at the time I still ended up doing all the actual editing and corrections, layouts, production, posting etc. throughout its 13 issue run as well as writing (and graphics) often under several different names to make it seem as though we had more contributors. Leighton's output as a writer throughout the run was amazing and between us issue and issue kept on being sent out. By issue 11 I was ready to give up but wanted to complete the sector (thank you Andy, your support kept it going) so it continued to run (at a loss) until issue 13 when I then handed it over completely to Leighton to continue it into Gushemege ... The rest as they say is history.

Re the other forums, sure anyone want to post a review? Otherwise it will probably not mean a lot to anyone who isn't personally starting to identify with Grandfather...

Thanks everyone - hopefully the next two issues will be posted in Feb.

Issue Ten

Richard,

Issue ten was posted today by airmail so you should receive it sometime next week hopefully...

Signal GK issue #12 is now parked on the scottmartin.ca website. Direct links are:
3.7 MB - http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/Signal_GK/SGK_12/SGK_issue_12.pdf
1.3 MB - http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/Signal_GK/SGK_12/SGK_Library_D.pdf
600k - http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/Signal_GK/SGK_12/SGK_Library_G.pdf
400k - http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/Signal_GK/SGK_12/SGK_Vargr_Ships.pdf

I'll try to get around to updating the Signal GK page this weekend, but I'm afraid that my kids have higher priority ;)

Jae, would you like me to "bundle" this package so that all four files are available in a single download? If so drop me an email and I'll make it happen next week.

Priorities

Scott,

Right priorities - my four grew up way too fast (they act like adults from 14!) It's also the reason its taken until now for me to consider revisiting this stack of material - It's up to you whether you'd rather do the whole issue as a zip or not. Might be easier to host/maintain?

Thanks again

Jae (at work)

Signal GK Updates

So the pile of Signal GK's (Issues 10-12 have been assembled into single file versions)

http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/SGK_issue_01.pdf
http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/SGK_issue_02.pdf
http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/SGK_issue_03.pdf
http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/SGK_issue_04a.pdf

http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/SGK_10_Full.pdf
http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/SGK_11_Full.pdf
http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/SGK_12_Full.pdf
http://www.scottmartin.ca/Traveller_FTP/SGK_13.pdf

You can get to all of these from the main scottmartin.ca website through "Other Peoples Stuff" and then "Signal GK" but I have a suspicion that many of you just want to grab some files ;)

10-12 have been consolidated into single units, so one download gets all of the supplements. If other folks hosting these want to grab the consolidated versions, please feel free.

Scott Martin

Wow -- I leave off visiting for a few weeks, and all kinds of movement takes place here.

Is it too late to help out with more scanning? I see issues 5-9 still need doing. I'd be happy to throw my hat in. I just got a new printer/scanner and am ready to roll.

best,
Howard

Update

EXCITING STUFF:

Leighton is busy putting together a fully pdf'd version of issue 5 which will hopefully see the light of day in a few weeks and there is discussion about continuing with a fully pdf'd version of six.

I will release the missing issues over the next few months and there is a discussion ongoing to see if we can track down some of the old DDT gang (as well as some new victims) to complete the updated Sector library data and hopefully a sector species book and even (SHOCK, HORROR) the possibility of the occasional new issue if there is enough material to justify an annual.

Despite the quiet, there is a lot going on behind the scenes.

I guess I've got another reason to live now (apart from the other ones ;) )

Thanks for the great work to one and all on the SGK team!
