After re-reading SSOM stuff about jump drives... (snip of nifty DGP house rule not found in the basic MT rules)

Ishmael,

That is a nice rule. It's simple to grasp, easy to calculate, and easier to implement.

Of course, you wouldn't be aware of it unless you owned SSOM. "Hiding" a vitally critical ship damage mechanism in a somewhat rare third-party publication isn't exactly the best way to disseminate important rules, don't you think? ;)

Have fun,
Bill

you got that right.
I was lucky to get my copy...a game con decades ago. I've never seen it anywhere since.
A pitty because the other little 'color' rules about performance-based tasks and warning-light tasks are nifty.

I did think of one thing after all this...

if a grid is embedded in the hull, then the hull would have to be penetrated in order to for the grid to be damaged. Ordinary surface hits would just scrape bits off the hull instead of penetrating deep enough, right?

Depends on the rules.

Book 2 combat a "Hull" hit decompresses the whole ship. Seems to me that implies a pretty big and deep penetration, maybe even a through shot. But, it's a very broad damage system there and no mentions of collateral damage so...

Book 5 doesn't even do "Hull" hits. Pretty much every shot does some specific damage to a system. Not only do hulls seem invulnerable (except for crits wearing away armor, and never below zero) it seems the old problem of decompression from combat has been fixed too ;)

Other rules may handle it differently, but again it comes down to "kewl chrome was added without any much apparent concern for game play or rules" :)
