Ways to destroy civilizations for your games

I like number 10 on the Destroy Earth list :)

Wasn't there a Golden Age Sci-Fi short story built on that? Somebody "unthought" the Earth and poof it was gone? I'm drawing a blank on anymore than that though. Maybe I'm conflating a few stories. Love that word, conflating...

There was Arthur C. Clarke's "Nine Billion Names of God", a short story that results in the end of all things. Funny how Clarke kept showing up on this list.

Take Two *

Yeah I had Clarke's "Nine Billion Names of God" in mind, but it didn't feel quite the one. Could be though :)

* first post went "pop", I'm sure I hit the submit button, maybe I unthought it ;) (or maybe the recent Firefox update is a bit buggy...)

The thread was about destroying a civilization, not a world, so I'll add in a pretty good way to destroy a civilization:

A political faction that supports big business and the rich only begins to lower politics to the third grade level by reducing everything to jingoism, name calling, insults, etc. They do this through talking heads who do nothing but spew childish insults while telling lies and half truths.

The faction accuses anyone who disagrees with them on any issue of being unpatriotic, socialist, communist, soft on crime, etc.

When in power, the faction passes one law after another that benefits the wealthy at the expense of everyone else. They dismantle regulations meant to control big business, protect the public from monopolies and exploitation, protect the environment from ruin, protect consumers from being cheated, protect workers from being abused, etc. Anyone protesting these moves is simply dismissed as a "socialist" or some other negative buzzword.

As the rich get richer while the median income drops, the faction tells everyone that "average" incomes are rising.

Allow employers to ship jobs out of the polity to other polities that use cheap labor such as child labor, prison labor, etc. and that ignore environmental protection laws.

The rich continue to get richer, the rest of the populations income, standards of living, etc decline. Meanwhile, try to start a bogus war that allows you to take the tax money of the majority and give it directly to corporations under the guise of funding the war.

Let the rich use external tax shelters to keep from paying taxes. Meanwhile the tax revenue of the rest of the people drops as they lose their jobs and incomes drop. Continue to take the remaining tax money and funnel it to major corporations through the bogus war.

Eventually the middle class collapses and the government has no money to run things as the middle class don't have any money to tax and the rich aren't paying any. Then the civilization implodes.

Works great. Just look at real life for examples.

Technically, since he didn't mention any names, if he deletes the part about 'just look at real life', you could apply it to a Balkanized world.

I disagree- I dont think Thing is on the line at all. There is no mention of any particular polity, policymaker et cetera, ad nauseum.... It reads more as a list of methods to achieve the goal of destroying a civilization- which is exactly the topic, and which would work if employed over a long term in any real world or fictional world setting. Even the statement to look to real life for examples does not state any specifics and leads the student to learn more on his own.

Quantitive political content < 1 in my opinion.....

what about Krakatoa

I saw that the list included the 1815 explosion but I believe the Krakatoa explosion about the turn of the century should have been included before some of the others.

Thing: You're right at the line. Don't push it.
Ohhhh, look at me! I'm a mod! I can use red text! I can intimidate people! Ohh, I'm baaaad!

Look, little billy badass, the thread was about destroying civilizations. I pointed out a way a civilization could be destroyed. The fact I happened to cite things that are happening in modern civilization doesn't change the fact it was a legit reply to the original topic.

Thank you for seeing the point of the reply. At least some people here have more intelligence than snark...

BTW, you'd make a better mod than either of the two above your post...

Civilization could be destroyed by just about any political system taken to extremes--that is with no means for being corrected by the people living under it aside from violence, where even mute intransigence doesn't work.

Its even possible to have the politics swing back and forth during the collapse--a libertine revolution followed by a dictatorial counter-revolution, etc. Heck, with the communications systems shot you could have propagating waves of different governmental systems moving across a planet as the core population centers swing back and forth.

Wouldn't be too long before everyone's back to dirt farming and hoping the terraforming holds up to the mess, since who's bothering to manage such large-scale things now?
