I havent really played traveller, but id really love to learn. im extremely interested in these types of rpgs and the fact of the matter is i cant find anywhere to get the core material for the game, and i have no clue what material to even start considering!

i'd really appreciate some help, as this forum was a great find for me, but im absolutely lost in it.

Welcome aboard ISOLATEDViRuS :D

And welcome to Traveller. It is a bit daunting for new players. OK, a LOT daunting ;)

Don't be afraid to jump in with questions though, that's the best way to answers. We really could use a Beginner's Guide to the Galaxy sort of thing. But who would write it? Actually, I wonder if Marc is working or considering such a thing for T5 or T6? There are a couple of earlier introductory bits that I'd have to dig around for.

Book 0 for CT should be available as a free download somewhere, maybe FarFuture.net? Hmm, didn't find it there, but check this link...

Starter Traveller

...is free until the end of the year! A Christmas present from Marc! WOOT! That is not only all the rules you need to start playing Classic Traveller, but I think it includes the introduction and maybe an adventure?

If you'd like to play pretty much the same game, but a bit updated and in current publication, with hardcopy printed titles available you should check out Mongoose Publishing and their current Traveller line. To get you started their forums are here:

been playing Traveller since it came to my Local Hobby shop in winter of 1977-78. Yes I play other RPG's but I always come back to Traveller.

Hi. I just registered. Thought I'd try doing a sort of adventure / novella with some of my old Traveller stuff. I'll be putting up the characters (4 of them... A rogue, an assassin (using the Paranoia Press version), a pilot / starship operator and, an engineer / technician).
Right now I'm working on a back story for each to make them more 3 dimensional....

Hello! I've spent the last few weeks lurking and collecting information in preparation for my first Traveller campaign, and I feel it's about I time I made a grand entrance! Or at least dropped a thank you note for all the help you guys have unwittingly provided me

I'm 21, and hail from the distant planet of Paris/France.

I've been introduced to RPGs a couple years ago by a friend, had a lot of fun, but the group died out... Never heard of Traveller until about a month ago, when I got this feeling I just had to play in space! So I started looking up various SFRPGs, and something in the way Traveller was presented struck a chord.

My preferred system would have to be MgT, by virtue of being the one I chose because of the cool black cover and pocket-sized rulebook when I had to choose between CT (I think it was CT? All those versions get me confused) & MgT at Ye Local Game Shoppe, but thanks to far-trader above me I will be soon perusing the CT pdfs :D

My favorite race has to be us! Human beings are complex enough for me ;)

The main influences on MTU would be CJ Cherryh's Alliance/Union series, Firefly, Asimov's Foundation, EVE Online's player-driven politics & hypercapitalism, as well as general cyberpunk elements and my irrational aversion to introducing alien sophonts. Haven't kept much, if anything really, of the OTU for my future players, but I hope to maybe sneak into a PbP of some sort to get to know it better - all the ressources on this site and many others have begun to make me quite fascinated with it.
