How big a deal is the Starburst for Extreme Heroism?

Either GURPS-Traveller or HERO-Traveller (yes, they came out with that a couple of years ago, just before the Mongoose took over the nest).

Oh, really?

You mean that Hero System logo on all my Champions (and other non-Champions Hero System material) wasn't just there by accident?

There really IS a connection between the two?

Nooo, couldn't be.

I had no clue whatsoever.

Thank you so much for telling me this.

I have no idea how I missed it ever since 1984 when I bought my first Champions books... no idea whatsoever.

The only way to earn the SEH is to imitate Ellen Ripley, and take off and nuke the site from orbit.

Interesting thread...

Like Wil, I'd always assumed the SEH was more like the Army/Navy/Air Force Cross than the MOH or VC. Chargen simply produces too many of them and I figured the real award to be gained in the Imperial service was a knighthood.

With regards to the SEH-class of cruisers, they're named after posthumous recipients and not every recipient.

Regards,
Bill

Reading on the comparisons with the VC - are the SEH gongs made out of anything special or rare? (Eg: VC's are supposably made out of cannons grabbed from the siege of Sevastopol).

Would the SEH have something similiar (say, made from the metal of Cleon I's personal ship) or would this be impossible due to the sheer numbers awarded as some are suggesting?

Forget not the Imperium is over 1100 years old. The criteria for issuing medals can change 100 times over.

Example: MOH awarded.

US CW 1522
Indian Wars 426 (33 years long)
WW2 464
Boxer Rebellion 59 (lasted 2 months, US had only a couple of regiments in action)

On the VC 11 were awarded at Rorke's Drift a 12th denied to one dead man. That means 10% of garrison was awarded the medal.

Medal inflation is always a problem. A friend of mine had to certify a Gen. for a Purple Heart, for cutting his finger on barbed wire at a WW2 MASH unit in Solomons.

And of course the US CW winners would only be for the Union Troops - non for the Johnny Rebs who may have had a like number of heroic actions taking place.

I approached it differently.

I never viewed the SEH as either the VC or the CMH. I always viewed it as the 3I equivalent of the Knights Cross. That was the only way I could come up with that made sense to me.

I also had an old Medal yearbook & I went to town with it, creating all kinds of awards for almost every career service under the sun.

No one had a SEH, but a lot of them did have equivilents. Made the characters much more interesting.

I've always seen the SEH as the equivalent of the MoH or the VC, and didn't like how prevalent they were. (It is not uncommon to roll characters with two or three after a number of terms.) I decided to develop some house rules to cover that, and tried to cover some non-combat awards as well. The following is the Imperial system IMTU:

Starburst for Extreme Heroism (SEH): +9 to decoration roll (1st award), combat assignment required. Second award requires a roll of +12, else ISC below.

Imperial Service Cross (ISC): +6 to decoration roll.

Medal for Conspicuous Gallantry (MCG): +4 to decoration roll, combat assignment required else IMSM.

Imperial Meritorious Service Medal (IMSM): +3 to decoration roll.

Meritorious Conduct Under Fire (MCUF): +2 to decoration roll, combat assignment required else ICM.

Imperial Commendation Medal (ICM): On decoration roll.

Imperial Good Conduct Medal (IGCM): Awarded to long-service enlisted personnel. Roll 9+ once per term starting with term three. DM +1 per term after term three. Not available to any personnel who have rolled a two for decoration, and can only be awarded once.

I like the MT rule (though I am a CT guy) of the technical promotion on mustering out for a recipient of the SEH, and I retain that. For non-Imperial recipients, I change the name to "Legion of Honor" with the planet's name preceding. The promotion remains.

Mercenary XP Points: SEH/4; ISC/3; MCG, IMSM/2; MCUF, ICM, IGCM/1

I'm not sure I would use those exact names, but the idea has great merit in the face of the standard three award system.
