Signal GK

If not too expensive, yes, count me in too!

BTW, there's a bit of copyright fair use which says that a publisher can reprint periodicals indefinitely without recompensation (aside from any royalty promised) provided that the entire periodical stays intact. (Hence why the Dragon CD-set has ALL the adverts still intact.)

Primary purpose was for library use of bound annual reprint volumes (IE, Vol 1 issues 1-10 being bound into a single hardcover, and being reprinted in typical hardcover method) and for library CD-rom collections of archived issues.

There was comment on the Dragon CD about the why. (I have a mac... I can't use the interface, but I got to easily find some things not easily found on the interface!)

I haven't looked at it yet, but as Leighton is in the UK there is a new and apparently very draconian EU Copyright directive which is often at odds with US law, so remember jurisdiction issues guys...

Just thought I'd give people an update as there is still interest being generated on the forum.

I'm making slow progress I'm afraid - it's the OCR process - but I'm trying to do bit everyday. The plan is - all on one CD - it might take me to Christmas, but the aim is to get it out for the Holiday Season. I've scanned most of the issues and OCRed about a third. There will have to be quite a bit of editing to pick up the failures of the OCR software (I've organised a meeting for work and I've attracted a sponsor who's a big player in the OCR market - with a bit of wheedling ....).

As for cost, the price will be just to cover the price of the CD (just a few pence/cents - whatever your currency may be) and postage/packaging. If we are all satisfied with surface mail then it shouldn't cost more than a couple of pounds/few dollars/Euros. As I've said before, Signal-GK fanzine was never meant to make money. I certainly do not want any financial reward from this. I'm happy to give my time.

As for Copyright, I'm not that worried so much about legal issues as making sure that the contributors are happy to see their work put out again. It's a courtesy thing.

Thanks for your interest. L

Count me in for a copy. I had just dug out the one issue I have (#1) to reread and decided to google Signal GK and came across this thread.

some of us orriginal authors of signal GK have never been away, and are reading this thread with interest...........

Hi,

Original publisher and creator etc. of Signal GK here - yes I'd spoken to Leighton some time ago about putting out the original mag (thank you for the compliments about it BTW) and have no problem with it being distributed by him but that I retain the copyright and would not be happy at unofficial copies being made - the problem with Encycl. Dagudashaag and the Xenologica (local aliens) is that BITS was looking at publishing it but it is big (VERY), and needed updating especially as we tried to marry it up with MM's First Survey (and horrendous job, not least because several planets in Dagudashaag were renamed gas in the survey!!!) and then expanded... In the end the updates never got done and a few months ago I took it back hoping to turn it into a website but have barely started due to personal circumstances at present... I also lost a great deal of the updated library data (from S to Z) when a computer collapsed... Included on the CD? Possibly what Library Data had been published at the time, but the updated data is now a separate entity I'm afraid.

BTW copyright remains with myself and the authors and shouldn't be copied and distributed without our consent...

Mark me down for a CD too. A fanzine I'd heard of but never had copies of (unlike Security Leak, Third Imperium, etc) - how could I refuse?

If you are compiling a list, add tomb at stargrunt dot ca to your list (I wrote that longhand to avoid the search spiders, etc). Just email me and we'll talk about payment. (Int'l MO, Paypal, etc)

If that's Nick Walker then Hi Nick. Been looking for you but have lost your address. I'm still trying to gather permission from all the authors ....

Jae, if that's you then I should have most of Library Data from S to Z (at least up to issue 12).

I'm making slow progress, but I am making progress. I've recently moved which hasn't helped and I've a lot on a work (a big project about to go live and my butt is on the line). I have most text in Word DOC format, but most still needs editing for typo's etc.

Will keep you better informed over the next few weeks.

And if any of the old authors are reading this then please contact me about whether you would consent to seeing your work republished.

Thanks for your patience. L

I, too am interested in a signal GK CD... mostly because it's a mag I'd never heard of before the board.

Leighton & Jae:

Any update on this front. BTW, I also want to offer photocopies of any issues if you need it to help speed things up. I have every issue except #3 and the associated library data.

Just wish we could see both enclopedias included in the CD ROM project...I am sure the original creators would be honored. But, as you mentioned it...why doesn't BITS simply reprint everything with errata included...there is never one version of the Traveller universe, anyhow...

I've virtually finished all the OCR work except for the first and last issues. I've done some editing on those I've done the text extraction.

AS I said in an earlier post I've been tied up a work and haven't had any spare time for a few weeks until this last week. I underestimated the job in hand!

I haven't been able to contact all the original contributors but I'll be working on that as I go along.

I will try to give a weekly update post from now on.

Have faith, Leighton

I'm not going to beat you about the head and neck for having a life!

But certainly we're all anxious to see the result!

Keep up the yeoman efforts and when you're ready to roll, we'll be waiting.

(Having done some OCR myself, yes, that can be a pain, especially with the open source OCR tools...)

I've just come back from a holiday and haven't done much more as yet. I have 2 more issues to OCR - I've done a little more editing.

Will keep you posted.

Please let us know if you need any assistance. I don't mind helping to edit these files, if you need some extra eyes and hands.

With Regards,
Flynn

Thanks for the offer Flynn.

When I've got all the files extracted and in Word format -I'll probably break them down into single file per article - I'll let you now where I'm at.

Leighton

Dear All,

Apologies once again for the delay in passing out information. And once again real life has intruded on my plans and delayed me yet again. All the issues have now been scanned and OCR'd and I've edited about 4 issues (2-5).

I have rebuilt my PC and now have Microsoft Publisher on my machine so I've been experimenting with layouts etc., so I should have about the first 4 or 5 issues laid-out in the next couple of weeks. At last some real, physical examples coming soon!

Again, could I ask for anyone who knows the whereabouts of some of the original contributors, could they direct them to this site?

Thanks, Leighton
